Hi guys,

I usually practise my faro whenever I'm within an arms length of a deck - which is quite often. I always use Bikes. You know how it is, as soon as you see a cheap brick you pick it up, all your gaffs and gimmicks are Bikes etc. It's just habit.

However, about a year ago a received a few Phoenix decks. I have never had anything against the Phoenix decks, I've always liked the feel of them and the design is quite nice. Here in Europe people are more used to different types of decks so as long as they don't stand out in some strange way with inverted colors or what have you, most decks will fly by any audience. But alas, gimmicks and gaffs in Bikes so I've never gotten around to using Phoenix.

These days I hardly use any gimmicks or gaffs at all and are free to use any deck but since I have a huge pile of Bikes I thought I'd use them up first. But I digress, cheez, I'll get to the point already. Smile The other day I picked up a Phoenix deck and started to do faro shuffles. Is it just me or is it way easier to faro with a Phoenix than a Bike? I can do it just fine with both brands but it seems splitting is easier with Phoenix and the cards weave better as well.

What's your experience?

I have a few Phoenix Decks and I can't feel a difference when I faro them.

It all depends on whether you faro from the bottom up or top down

The latest phoenix decks are cut so they faro from the bottom up easily where as some of the earlier phoenix decks had a mix of how they were cut

Yes phoenix decks USED to be sold with a traditional cut and Bikes had a modern cut

BOTH decks are printed by USPCC so it's same stock and finish

However - NOW Phoenix are being printed with a modern cut as well - so brand new phoenix cards have almost no differences to a standard Bike deck (except the design)

learn more about stock, cut and finish from USPCC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_6bD9eRfu8

Maybe it's where I get my bikes, but I see a HUGE difference. Phoenix is the way I go for no worry faro.

Phoenix are "custom printed" deck so USPCC ups their quality control to a Q1 finish and that's probably what you're seeing / feeling

However if you purchased the Bicycle "titanium" editions

Or the Richard Turner gold standards - those both blow everything else out of the water

I think the quality of bikes have gone down a lot in the last few years. I'm new to magic really but I can feel the difference even from 5 years ago.

Huh that's weird, most of us in the card collecting community think that it's actually gone UP - after USPCC moved from Ohio to Kentucky -their print quality took a dip - made lots of people angry, but in the last few years they have actually been on the rise.

Especially when you handle their Q1 decks (like the ones they print for Ellusionist and Kickstarter) as far as I am concerned there is nobody out there who prints a better deck than USPCC

I've found that recent bikes, even the ones sold by Sam's Club, faro just fine and seem to be traditionally cut.

"seem to be traditionally cut."

That means they weave shuffle in the hands better face up into face up? That's what you're saying? I've never heard from any collector that off the shelf Bikes are "traditionally cut"

Reason being is the paper needs to be flipped over manually for a traditional cut and it slows down production - seems hard to believe USPCC would do that for their retail line when the only people who prefer traditional cut are gamblers and some magicians.

The only 808s I've handled in the last few years are the 12 packs from Costco, and those are just to destroy. If you say they are faroing a bit better now, I'll gladly pick up a few. I normally use the Turner Bikes or Aristocrats and these babies faro like butter. All of the "boutique" cards produced by Dan and Dave, Theory11 etc. also seem to handle very well.....Like you said, because these are done in very small batches compared to their normal cards.
