Hi All
I hope Xmas has been great for everyone. It has been excellent for me, but now boxing day has hit my mind is back on business I am filming an escape for Sky One (A national UK TV channel) in January and I want to add a small extra to it. I don't want to give away details of the escape except to say that it is a lock picking 'challenge' with a big risk attached. If you know the sort of stuff I do you will know the risk will be ridiculous and unusual! Anyway, the escape is worked out and sorted, but I would like to add a set of handcuffs to the mix, it is a last minute extra but I feel the escape needs it. I will need something I can get my hands on very quickly. Filming is on the 17th of Jan and I am having an operation on the 7th which will put me out of action for a week. So I need to do my final rehearsals in the first week of the new year. What I need is something reasonably inspectable which I won't need to practise much getting out of. Apart from a few peices all my stuff is legit, and I have no gaffed cuffs, however I don't have the time to work extra legit cuffs into the routine so I want to add a gaffed pair. Could someone recommend a suitable set which I can source quickly, particualry in the UK? Please PM me if you want more details, I am keeping my cards close to my chest in public as I am sure you can understand Cheers all David Straitjacket

Hey Dave buddy, the first thing that came to mind for me was the Saf Lok as well, quick, inspectable, non gimmicked "high security" you need help or info you know how to get a hold of me.
Cheers and good luck on the special, Shawn

Slightly off topic (Sorry David), but does anyone know anything about the current standard issue British Police speedcuffs by Hiatt and whether a specific key is needed for them or do they take regular universal handcuff keys?

JamesCheung I think it Might. do you have a set of Hiatt speedcuffs or do you have other sets of cuffs. some Hiatts to my knowledge will not take the universal key. Don,

The speedcuff takes a universal key, the one I have has a Hiatt universal key which (unlike most) does not open every cuff. Hiatt's universal key has an enlongated bit, it opens some Peerless cuffs and no S&W unless you file down the bit...er, um, a bit.

Dear James
You may need to practise with an extension tool. The police here in UK would probably cuff you with the keyholes facing away from your fingers. Keep your practice sessions short or you'll finish with sore wrists. Regards Riley |

James,
Here in the US they sell cheap sweat bands for your wrists. About $2 for a set. The very cheap ones will stretch for your ankles too. You may have to look for them at a sporting goods store there. The padding keeps you from losing any skin, and getting scraped up. Something that's a bit hard to explain when you show up for work on monday.

Ian McColl has an articulated extension tool - I'm not sure if it will take different keys. If you tell him what cuffs he'll probably tell you if it's suitable. My own design extension tool will accept any key, and will release you from UK police cuffs (Speedcuff / Quik-Kuf) in about 30 seconds. I'm not sure that anyone would escape from these cuffs in a hurry, but I'd be pleased to hear I'm wrong on that! My extension tool will be available summer 2004, PM me if you want to know more. The sweat band tip from KingStardog is excellent. Thanks guys. Riley |

Having been challenged by another UK Escape Artist to escape from a SpeedCuff I can honestly say that the Ian McColl extention tool works and also that the Gimmick X does not, in its standard form.
With a bit of filling, it works just as well. If it is only single lock mode than any method covering swing through ratcheted handcuffs featured in the works of Santini, DeVal, Bigelow, Ness, McColl et al will tell you how to overcome the ratchets.... Either that or you could buy Ratcheted Restraints and see the inner workings of the cuff sketched out + a few tips on how to get out....not plugging it but the link is http://www.earlib.org or http://www.ukea.org.uk Great idea with the sweat socks....if you had hard plastic bracelet under it you could slip them over your wrists and therefore the cuffs could fall off with little effort.....just a thought. |

Hello Stuart
Thanks for info re Ian's extension tool. I vividly remember the day I mentioned to David about his Gimmick X and the SpeedCuff / Quik-Kuf. His comment was along the lines of "Oh, hell..". It was hinted that the second run would be altered (ie., the bit of filing you mention). Whether this ever happened, I don't know...I altered the one I had at one end and it's OK, but with Gimmick X the working angle is bad and awkward for the Quik-Kuf keyway. Nevertheless, a useful gaff. I can't imagine anyone who is really into (and out of ?) cuffs would be without any of these tools in their kit. I was privileged to see some of the gaffs from the collection of the late James Crossini. It's difficult and not even necessary to re-invent the wheel. Maybe just fine tune it a little. The principles remain the same - the details change a little. Fascinating territory ! Buy the gaffs while you can, you never know when they will become difficult to obtain. Best wishes Riley |

Thanks guys! The sweatband tip is a great one. Does anyone know if Ian McColl has a UK distributor as I would love to get hold of his articulated key extension tool?
Also has anyone come across the Cyclone handcuff or escaped from them? It's a variation on the Hiatt Speedcuff but apparently uses unique keys. Generally what tool/s would you carry around for impromptu police escape challenges and normally how rigorous a search (if any) would you allow? |

I found the Cyclone Handcuffs on the net. the site is http://www.cyclonehandcuffs.com apparently they only show one side of the Cuff. I'm willing to bet they are Escapeable from. I beleive Ian Mccoll is the UK Distributor for his Products. might want to contact him Direct. Don,

I do not know if Mr McColl has a UK distributor but Cannons shipping rates are ok, its the Customs duty that shocks you when it arrives!
I got into a speedcuff in the police position (arms behind, outstretched) and that was when I found out about the flaw in gimmick x...it was about 2002 I got it so it was not that long ago. Street Cuffs (a new form of bike lock) scare me more as they are a 9 pin timbler lock formation as opposed to the standard key. Most Police challenges have faded away as the local police authorities do not feel like running the risk of getting sued by a budding Nick Janson James, as you are new to escapes I'd better explain who Nick Janson is, he is the man who holds the world record for the number of times he has escaped from handcuffs applied by a police man, not the total number of handcuffs, but the number of police men who have put them on him. Last time I checked he was into the 2000's. That is 2000 Police Officers world wide have attempted to restrain him with their own cuffs and failed. He lives in Essex and has now retired. |

Nick sounds like quite a guy! However from what I hear you're no slouch either Stuart...what is it with you Essex guys? Must be something in the water!
How long did it take you to get out of the Speedcuffs and did you use the McColl tool? I would imagine the main problem would be maneouvring the tool into position. If you have any tips on bringing it into play then please PM me. |

Dear Shawn, in your message."

I was wondering what new method you have in mind? Or are you suggesting a method which already has a name and gives credit to the inventors?? Dear Riley, my articulated key for the Speedcuff has a standard handcuff ("universal" for you guys out there and not to be confused with the UK universal key which fitted Hiatt 1960, La trobe and standard issue Hiatts) This key will work both hiatts Speedcuff and US kwik-kuff. With regard to the original post from Dave Straitjacket, Good luck and well done on the television exposure. I look forward to watching it.
With regard to Mr McColl's extention tool, I have to say that it is a pleasure to use one and I owe a debt of thanks to James Peters for introducing me to it...as previously stated I was using an ungimicked De-Val Gimmick X and a simple shim to effect my escapes from the speedcuffs. James, thank you but I do not think that I am an expert on escapes, although thankfully there are many here, including X-Treem, McColl, Stardog and Mr Straitjacket who are. With regard to using the extention tool, it is a bit like playing the guitar, it looks easy but it comes down to knowing where to put your hands and making sure the audience only hears what you want them to hear. Happy New Year everybody |

Hi all
Thanks for the excellent help I have recieved. I am holding a lot back from this escape because, while this is TV exposure, it is not the greatest exposure in the world and I don't want to give everything to a smaller program. What I hope is to use it as a springboard to better work that will be worth giving everything I have. For that reason I am leaving the handcuffs out, though the new knowledge this threads has given me will be incredably useful for another escape I have in mind. Stuart, please don't knock yourself down. You know far more than I know, and far more than I probably ever know. I am far from an expert, indeed I have no desire to be. Rather to learn what I need to entertain as best I can. Entertainment, thrilling an audience, that's why my heart will always be. The only thing I am really good with is Straitjackets, hence the name! My real areas of knowledge are circus and sideshow. Thanks again everyone and Happy new year! David (not Dave!!!)
