On Thanksgiving Day, I asked my 10 year old Nephew what that thing on his wrist was. It looked like a watch but had no face and looked very waterproof.
My Nephew said that all the kids in his school had to wear it 24/7 and if they took it off they would be in trouble. I asked him what it was, he said it had something to do with his excercise. My Sister-In-Law is a Teacher at my Nephew's school, so I asked her. She said that it was a device to track how much physical activity the kids are doing every day. I asked what kind of trouble would the kids be in if they took it off. She said that if it is removed, even for just a minute, that information is logged and the parents would be notified that the device must stay on 24/7. My Sister-In-Law never asked any questions and just accepted the device as harmless. I just wonder what some here at the Café think of this and what would you think if or when your child comes home wearing one. I don't like the fact that there is penalty for taking it off or not accepting it in the first place. I have no reason to believe that this device is ONLY recording and sending data that pertains to movement only. It is thicker that the average watch. I am not so sure that it does not record sound as well as activity. As a Tax payer and a Parent, I don't like the idea that my child is being monitored like a criminal on house arrest and I don't pay my Taxes for this type of monitoring. I pay my Taxes to pay for the Teacher's, books, school and various school supplies that I also supplied every year for my own child as well as someone elses child. I don't pay for spying equipment. I would take it off immediately if I hadn't given my prior approval.
And I would fight, fight, fight, fight, and fight long, hard and and with all my wherewithal against the Man, should it have been put on without my prior approval. That said, I would be STUNNED, SHOCKED, and HORRIFIED if parents hadn't been asked to give their consent beforehand. My guess is that they were. So get back to us with that little but crucial detail: could the parents have refused up front? I bet they could have. |

My guess is that your nephew's class is involved in research. I'm with Jeff: it would be shocking if the parents weren't notified. It may be different in Washington, but where I live, parents would have to give active, positive consent. That is, they would have to sign forms indicating that they have read the proposal and that they agree to their child's participation. I believe (but I could be wrong) that some states allow "negative consent"--they send home the information and if you don't decline, then your child is in the study.

AT 10 years old I'm pretty sure me and my buddies would be trying to figure out ways to trick the thing.

No prior announcement or consent for you to ok this- I would immediately take the band off my child's wrist and deliver it to the school with some questions prepared for the principle.

I'm with Stoney...something like that (without prior approval and/or even just a demand to wear it) would set me off for sure.
And nobody tracks my kid for any reason outside of school. Who the hell do they think they are? I'm real curious on the followup to this.

This is apparently a specific program being run out of one county in Washington state to track childhood obesity: http://www.heraldnet.com/article/2013092......ier-kids

I don't know. From what I read the program is a good one, kids who participate get a free YMCA membership and the reviews of the program seem positive. Didn't see one negative review. The kids seem excited and the data they collect will be used to determine why kids stop exercising in 6th grade. apparently one third of all Snohomish County 5th graders are obese.

So it sounds as if not only they were notified, but also gave consent and probably volunteered?
As always seems more to the story. I am all for no tracking, get rid of government and blah blah blah. BUT this does not seem like an intrusion. It seems like a consent thing. I say "seems" mind you. As far as the fat kids thing, it is easy. Too many computers, too few active live games.

That's all good, positive, etc. It's the possibility of damanding it and 'without consent' that is upsetting. It would seem almost impossible that they'd install it without consent...so there's part of the story missing, I assume.
I wonder if there's a ratio to fat and lack of school sports equipment or programs? Anybody got a guess as to what they will find? Anything surprising or just the obvious? Internet = Lard?

Apparently, there is a trend of growing obesity AFTER the fifth grade. Trying to determine why is apparently one of the purposes of the study.

It may well be harmless but I don't know that for sure. If it is so fun and good, why the threat of punishment for removal at home? His Parents just assume that the school is only doing good by the kids. I suppose when Hitler gave those cute paper badges to the Jews, Gays and other's who did not fall into line with the Government, they too thought it was a good thing. I don't trust Government and it is Government who runs our schools. I would rather err on the side of safety and not accept the device. My Nephew is playing Football and is very active. He is not fat or lazy. Maybe when I see him again, I will start saying some things against the President and maybe make some threats, just to see if the feds show up to take my Brother away. Iven

All I know is a bunch of people are making a bunch of money running a program designed to tell us a bunch of stuff we already know and come up with a bunch of potential solutions that aren't new or particularly novel. There is no real mystery to the cause of childhood obesity, nor is there any mystery to preventing or reversing it.
