A few years ago, when I was a sophomore in high school, I was required to read, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. I thoroughly enjoyed it. During class discussions, the novel "1984" frequently popped up. I wanted to read it, but never really got around to it.
Until today. I just happened to be surfing the internet, when something reminded me of the book. So, I checked my college's library and checked out a copy (from 1949!). So far, I have read the first two chapters and I must say, it's better than I thought it would be. I really like it so far, and some of the early themes can still be applied today, nearly 65 years later. Tell me your thoughts on the book, if you've read it. |

You should get your thoughts from the Ministry of Information, not from us! I don't think I should give any unregistered opinion not approved by the authorities.

Folks, we actually are living the 1984 paradigm, the authorities just keep changing the dates.

Geez, I never knew 1984 had such a powerful impact on modern culture. I'm doing a lot of research on the book right now...crazy stuff. And as a young writer myself, it's works like this that just inspire me to continue writing. Maybe one day I can be as influential as this.
And I find it quite strange that this book was published only a year before his death. It's like...his swan song. Like he knew he was going to pass away but he had one last piece of wisdom to give us. Miraculous? Perhaps, if you believe in that stuff. And I know this sounds quite silly, but I just read a few things about how we use encourage Doublethink today, like with issues surrounding the War on Drugs or Obamacare. Now, of course, people could easily say that the Illuminati exists, but I might have to laugh at them. |

The elite always give us an enemy to hate, in this case it was Goldstein, today we have been given, man made global warming. You have got to love it.
Later, like Winston does, you might just find out it was all a scam, but your too late by then as they have got what they were after.

Missing from most reading lists on this subject, but well worth taking the time and trouble to find:
'This Perfect Day' by Leon Uris (author of the Boys from Brazil, among others). But just take comfort in the knowledge that, after all, it can't happen *here*. After all, we're far too self-aware, educated and 'open minded' to allow such a fascist state to rise again. But then again, who watches the watchers? I'll leave you with this final thought from "V for Vendetta": "People should not be afraid of their governments... Governments should be afraid of their people." Ladies, Gentlemen. *tips hat*

Satellite, a couple of years ago I started a thread recording my comments as I (re)-read through 1984 chapter by chapter. I stopped doing it as interest waned here, but you might want to pick it up, or at least take a look at it:

IMO, I think Orwell missed the mark with his dystopian vision. His was a product of an era of warring political philosophies (democracies, communists, capitalists, socialists, nationalists, anarchists). So 20th century...
If he had written his story today the nemesis would probably be the Privatization of "double-think", rather than government. It's a crazy feels-like-you-opted-in model where values are manipulated by advertising, geo-targeting, subliminal imaging and data-mining your demographic more than by government. It's not Big Brother that is telling you "less is more", it's Big Business. Government just goes along for the ride... and brings the riot control. If you liked 1984, I would suggest trying the novels of a more modern futurist like William Gibson. |

If you haven't done so already, you should read "Animal Farm".

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny 'failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions.' In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us.” --Neil Postman Amusing Ourselves to Death
