Hello all,
I recently purchased something via PayPal and the seller added 4% to his listed price to 'cover his costs'. PayPal and direct bank transfer were the only methods of payment the seller would accept. I've never had a seller add 4% to their listed price to cover their PayPal costs and I've purchased loads of stuff via PayPal for years. This can't be normal can it? Has anyone else ever had a seller add on 4% to their list prices to 'cover their costs'? Regards, Lar. |

I've never had this happen and I think I'd take him to task for that. It should have been mentioned that he was going to do this in his ad.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I've had some ask for it and I declined the purchase. The seller pays a transaction fee to PayPal and some sellers try to get this expense back by charging the buyer rather than accept it as a cost of doing business.

The 4% thing really bothered me at the time and if I hadn't really wanted the item then I would have backed out of the purchase because of that.
I'm satisfied with the item I purchased (it works as expected) but dealing with the seller was an immensely frustrating experience on many fronts, so much so that I will not be purchasing anything else from them in the future. 'Vote with your wallet' as the saying goes. Regards, Lar. |

If told ahead of time obviously no gripe. I believe you had to fill in the amount you paid him so you must have known. I have definitely seen ads that state purchaser must add x% to cover paypal costs. I think it is silly because they should just put it in the selling price. However it is like putting a price on something then adding the words, "plus shipping and handling."
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

I'm pretty sure this is against Paypal's policy. Or at least it was at one time. I would contact Paypal. They're usually very good and helpful.

Only if you agree is it right.

Only if you agree is how I remember it. I THINK if you buy it on Ebay, the fee listed is only what they seller can charge.

Just to clarify.
In my particular case only the retail price was listed on the website. There was no mention of PayPal or methods of payment on his website. It was when I was finalizing the details of my purchase with the seller that he mentioned the 4% surcharge added on to the retail price listed on his website if I purchased using PayPal. The price he quoted for postage was reasonable. I agreed the price (including the 4% surcharge he added to his retail price) because I wanted his product. It was my choice and the seller can set his prices as he likes. I just found the 4% add-on odd because normally a seller would include costs like that (excluding P&P which is variable) in their prices. This seller chose not to. Regards, Lar |

This is Paypal's call on charging extra fees.

I've heard of people doing this. If the item is valuable enough, and you don't mind paying it, go ahead. But you don't have any obligation of going through with the sale if you don't want to pay it. Just cancel the sale.

4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions. In hindsight if I had known what I know now then I would have drawn the seller's attention to the PayPal User Agreement which prohibits sellers from adding on a surcharge or other fee for accepting payment via PayPal. If the seller had still insisted on adding on the 4% then I probably would have backed out of the sale (grudgingly) and reported the seller to PayPal for breaching their User Agreement.
