Hey guys, I have been doing strictly cards for the last couple of years. I am now looking to incorporate different aspects of magic into my strolling act. I know NOTHING about coins or coin magic in general. What do you guys recommend by either DVD or effects for a strolling magician looking to break into coins? Thanks for your help.

They both involve gaffs, but you cannot go wrong with Copper Silver Brass or Hopping Half. Both are available for reasonable prices and are very powerful tricks. Definitely consider Johnson's line of products since they are high quality, affordable and readily available. Any magic shop should be able to demo either effect for you.
For non-gaffed coin magic, invest in a copy of Stars of Magic and check out Vernon and Scarne's effects. Spellbound is still one of the best coin routines ever, at least in my opinion. If you are a more visual learner, pick up Johnny Thompson's Commercial Classics Volume 3 and learn it from there. There are several other great coin effects on that disc as well. Johnny Thompson is a great teacher and fun to watch. Aside from that, pick up Noblezada's In The Beginning There Were Coins. For a beginner friendly introduction, you can't beat it. He teaches all the basics, and some great coin routines that are within anyone's grasp who is willing to put in the work. There are MANY other resources available, but that should be enough to get you started. Best, Allen

The Metal DVDs from E by Eric Jones are okay.
Michael Ammar has coin work on his DVDs, he teaches the sleights very well. Karl Hein just recently came out with "Catch Up" which is a strolling Copper Silver Brass routine David Roth has resources, some table work there Dean Dill has work, check out the video on YouTube with dean dill and the church of living water's Kirk Cameron. Maybe search "Dean Dill living water" That might get you pumped to learn shell/table work. David Stone has great DVD. Personally I'm going to be getting Karl Hein's DVD and a CSB set soon. And there are a ton of coin tricks. Start with one and perform the heck out of it if it fits your style then add more if you want. I had the problem starting out with learning sleights and not knowing what to do with them, make sure you learn a routine that incorporate the sleights. |

Thanks guys for the great resources...It seems like I go on a magic website and there are literally hundreds of coin effects and dvds. Anybody ever play around with "scotch and soda" I heard that is a straight forward beginners effect...probably has many many variations as well.

Scotch and Soda is another great one to start with, and would be available at any magic dealer. Not difficult to do, and gets some great reactions. Many different presentations for it.

I think a well executed 3 fly is great. The sleights aren't too hard, it can be done with no gimmicks or just a [, almost no reset, and no need for a table. I think almost no pocket space and the fact that it is very visual is also a plus.
A good solid one coin routine is also priceless for the same reasons already stated for 3-fly. These are both great visual openers. They do not require audience interaction and establish that you are a magician. I would learn either of these before buying expensive gaffs. The sleights you learn will serve you well forever and also be useful for effects with gaffed coins. |

Does it bother anyone but me that the mexican coins used don't exist in reality?

It did in like 1960. I have one that I got from a coin dealer. Granted it is much thicker than the one used in the trick. You could say the same thing about English pennies or half dollars, at least they don't exist in circulation...

Wait, do you mean the thin ones never existed? And were solely created for magic purposes? (That is an honest question) I do a copper silver, and allot of people have never seen the pennies before. Some people are interested in seeing foreign coins they have never seen before. I use halves as change. To the original poster J. B. Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. Don't try to learn EVERYTHING in it, read through it once, then treat it as a reference book. If you want to learn how to do any type of coin routine, you can figure out a way to do it using the slights taught in his book. "Coin under watch" Second this. To contradict what I just said, I'm pretty sure this isn't taught in Bobo's. However its not that hard to figure out if you know how to do coins across/to glass already. If it fits your style, walk as far away from them as possible while still being able to see the last/the coin in your hands and not being too ridiculous. Then from across the room, "NOW IF YOU WOULD CHECK (b)UNDER(b) YOUR WATCH!" IMHO It builds prestige and anticipation for the people who haven't seen you yet. |

I think a good coin flurry is something ANY magician should know, in addition a coins across and a C/S routine will also serve you well.
One thing I discovered was a lot of fun coin tricks look good head on but not so much is someone is one either side or looking from below.

Jamie Grant's book I should add is a good investment. My strolling magic is much better routined than what it used to be thanks to some of the advice he offers in his book. It has significantly improved my strolling magic taking his advice. I don't have the book YET, but I read some of the chapters he offered for free to those thinking of buying his book. I requested his book as a Christmas present. But what I did read has improved my strolling magic much better as far as routining.

One coin routines and 3-fly are great visual non-interactive routines, but for me, I love the really interactive in their hand magic possible with coins.
Coins across ending in their hand, C/S in their hand, expansion of texture (check this out in Bobo's - it involves a hanky, but is well worth it. I refused to use hankies in magic until I read this effect!) and body loading (including under watch!) top my list. I also love to produce my coins first. I use the 1 to 4 production from Bobo's as an opener and this is also fun and interactive as you can produce from spectator's clothing. |
