I am new to this, but want them for kids magic shows and such. I am looking for ringneck birds, trained or not.
P.S. Non smoking only |

I don't know where you are. However, the local zoo usually has an over popuation of ringnecks they will "trade" for a contribution. They might even like a magic show for the employees! That will usually get both of you some publicity too.

When I first was looking for a pair of doves I called several pet shops, but mostly found Diamond Doves. A smaller type that is not white. White doves like you want are white ring neck pigeons. I also checked a few bird fairs and small pet fairs, but found parrots and cockatiels, and my Mini-Rex rabbit. Finally I found a small aviary while driving through Kent Ohio. He has a stock of breeders, (i.e. not tame), but if you get them young enough they can be hand tamed very easily. Trained to do tricks like flying back to you or your perch is easy, but time consuming. You can probably find one closer to you, or on upatsix.com that will ship during better weather.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I did not know doves could smoke. Doug in Michigan breeds white doves for magicians.
Call Abbott's Magic Co. and ask if they can give you his name and phone #. Think he is in Battle Creek, MI. He also breeds Osterage's. Bill |

I used to get all my doves from Doug, his birds were the cadallacs of dove magic. Everybody who was anybody got their doves from him. I talked to him last summer and he said he wasn't breeding them anymore, just his rabbits now. His name is Doug Collins and he's really a great guy. Even though he doesn't breed them anymore he'll probably have some information and recommend someone else. Good luck!

One way to find doves is to go to The American Dove Association at:
http://www.doveline.com They should have members ready to sell you whites, pieds, ring necks and others. (I don't recommend the silky type for magic.) They also have bird shows that may be near you. Remember that within the USA you can mail doves at the PO. (It will cost you about $20 to mail up to 6 doves over night. It's a deal!) Don't forget to consider the weather if you have to ship the doves. Good luck! Let us know what you find. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Sperris,
Thanks for the update. I can never remember names. He is a great guy. I anyone is at Abbott's Get-together in August, he is always there. He tells everyone he is the one with the red baseball cap. Bill |

Still another source of doves:
Stromberg's (Phone 1-800-720-1134) http://www.strombergschickens.com $35 - $80 / pair Shipping is $75.00 for 6-10 birds They do have a free catalog with birds, books and supplies. My experiences with them have been good. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

How do you train doves into flying back to you or to their perch?

Doug no longer sells doves and winters in Florida.
Posted: May 4, 2004 9:46pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I personally train birds and sell them, I'm working on one for a friend right now to fly to a bouquet of roses from the back of the auditorium. I've trained them to land on shoulders, props/perches, return flight, etc. If you're interested let me know, if you're going to be at SAM this summer, I’m going to be delivering some doves to a few clients there too.
