Happy Holidays everyone!
I've been out of the magic scene for sometime now and I'm now ready to jump back in. I'd like to return to my first love affair, coin magic. I'm looking for either a DVD or book on coin magic that teaches effects/routines with regular coins and perhaps the use of a "turtle" gaff (no flippers or magnets for now). Looking for routines that can be done standing, with no table needed, preferably routines that can be done in the spectator's hands. Can you guys make some recommendations? Thanks a bunch! Roberto

The New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series has 17 discs, over 34 hours, and over 225 routines on coin magic, including moves, workshops, and discussions. The Roth three volume beginner DVD set is great for someone just getting back into the swing, and the 4 volume gold set is a compilation if many of Roth's videos with a ton of material. The Ammar DVD is a good introduction as well. Then there is my Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights, consisting of 3 volumes and over 100 coin moves on all phases of coin magic. More? You got the nice series by Curtis Kam, Dean Dill has a lot of Matrix and translocation stuff, and good DVDs by individuals like Reed McClintock, David Neighbors, Jay Sankey, Lawrens Godot, Giacomo Bertini, Jean Emmanuel Francis, Ponta the Smith, Akira Fuji, to name a few. Some of these are very challenging. Then there are the compilation DVDs like the Coin Classics, Coinvention, European Coin Magic Symposium DVD series, the L&L series that focuses on certain plots, etc. then there are DVDs that contain coin magic as well as cards, etc. look to John Carney, Paul Gertner, Paul Harris, Al Schneider, and so much more. Then there are the Penguin online lectures with a new magician every week teaching cards, coins, etc. Kainoa Harbottle, David Roth, and myself did all coin lectures. And the there are books. After Bobo look at Al Schneider on Coins, Kaufmans Coinmagic, Roth's Expert Coin Magic, the Reed MClintock Knucklebisters series, and the new David Neighbors book series. Or better yet, just do a google search and look at the contents of each of the tomes listed here, and see what appeals to you. There is much more out there then what I can tell you. There are guys on here as well that have some nice downloads you can look into as well. You should know about a lot of them just by being on the Café. Whatever you choose, wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

Jonathan/Michael,
Thanks for the response. I still have my copy of Bobo's I bought back in the early 90's. I spent a lot of time studying that book, mostly the sleights. What I'm looking for now are stand up routines that aren't too "gaffy" with exception of a turtle. Yesterday I spent some time working on Roth's Shell Coins Across as well as on Liwag's CoinOne routine. As for Michael's recommendation, great stuff. I just don't want to overwhelm myself with material and would prefer to just work on 2 or 3 coin routines. Any other suggestions? Please keep them coming. Thanks again! Roberto

Work on a one-coin routine. Start with Roth's, which will give you a basic structure. In a one-coin routine, there are several vanishes and reappearances. You can work on what suits you. There is also the matter of timing and flow, all things you can adapt to your particular style and personality. There is also patter.
I started with Roth's routine about 15 years ago and am still working on it. I changed some of the vanishes, and my flow is different than Roth's. A one-coin routine is a good thing to have in your repertoire. It also makes a great opener. |

Hiya 68, Happy Holidays to you and welcome to the Café, or welcome back.
![]() You've gotten some excellent responses here already, but I'd say that when it comes to coins and a solid effect, you can't get much better than where you're at in playing with Roth's Shelled Coins Across…It is just a perfect effect and quite doable behind a little practice. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you want to go completely gaff less, well there are some fine effects out there, classic and or a bit newer to the fold. Of course, you can find your own groove with One Coin Routines, and like Ray says here, it affords you grand opportunity to work on vanishes, reproductions, patter (if you like) and overall presentation. Spellbound is also a good one to work on, and Roth covers these as well. But as Doc mentions here, there are many fine others that have what you're looking for here, if you don't mind not having to go to the top of the mountain, so to speak. ![]() ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J7W-5ter1k Another really wonderful little effect off the beaten path is one called, Pocket Passport. It meets all the qualifications you request here and is absolutely baffling. ![]() ![]() ![]() Again welcome and enjoy the journey. ![]()

Ray, good advice. I think you definitely hit it on the nail with a one coin routine as there so many things involved; vanishes, productions, passes, etc.. Thank you.
Mb, nice video, thanks! This Pocket Passport, where or who is this from? I appreciate the suggestions/advice. I was looking into a DVD by Kranzo called Stand Up Coin Magic. The content listed looks like it's just what I'm looking for (no table needed/stand up). Roberto

Thanks for the compliment and I PM'd you 68.
![]() Also, another wonderful little DVD with some excellent walk around coin magic is Eric Jones' "Mirage et Trois." It is a complete coin routine made of 3 individual standup/ walk around effects that play well together or all by themselves. It is made of some very slick coin tricks. A great package of effects from an exceptional worker (and Café member here). A little practice and you have all you need, to extraordinarily do what you ask for here. It truly is "completely" perfect! Here, see for yourself… ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_HXOO9D5xs

As a beginner I was wondering about what patter to use in a particular situation. I am practicing a beginner trick where I french drop, show the empty hand, and then classic palm the coin, and wave the hand with the coin across to drop the coin in the empty hand to re-appear it. My question is what do I say while waving the hand with the coin over the empty one. There has to be some reason to wave that hand back across to drop the coin to re-appear it. Sorry if this sounds like a terrible beginer question, but that's just what I am.

If you can make a coin disappear... The challenge is to justify bringing it back.
Some fun can be had in offering to make a coin pass, by magic, from your tightly clenched hand to under their foot... And after some searching the coin is found somewhere just as impossible. Story Premise Script I grew up near enough to Stuyvesant HS that I walked to school. ![]()

I do a bit more than that at times with a coin in a quick set, and most times never say much of anything at all. I just let the moments tell itself, and people understand it just fine and the amazement is always there just the same. So yes, there is a "reason" why you might wave your hand over the other hand, and that is to bring about the magic (David Roth always speaks of this specific action) but it doesn't have to be spoken... I'm just sayin'. ![]() Again, welcome to the Café and enjoy the journey. ![]() -Mb Oh, and I used to visit Tarrytown all the time as a kid, up beyond Yonkers Raceway…:) And for what it's worth here, I went to the High School of Art & Design, one of the specialized NYC HS's, like Stuyvesant. ![]()

Thanks MB. Makes sense like a magic gesture. Happens so fast doesn;t really need explanation. Funny you mention Yonkers Raceway. I played gigs there for years with my Allman Brothers tribute band

TCB,
Here's a great little book that won't overwhelm you, but will teach you some principles of coin magic, along with some good tricks. It's written by a fellow who also happens to frequent the Café from time to time. Fast Track Coin Magic by Al Schneider. http://www.amazon.com/Fast-Track-Coin-Ma......in+magic
