I believe that some guy in Switzerland claims to have the Patent on water. Do you have to pay him royalties, or the Tesla family?

Here is the start of a lateral internet marketing and branding by Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. It is very new, and only has 800 thousand hits and a couple thousand likes.
I suspect that there will be some sort of Superbowl commercial that these music videos will be touted. These are way over the line, raunchy and foul-mouthed. So warning. The idea is fascinating. Instead of doing commercials pitching the product, they do product placements in music videos they have completely written, shot and produced themselves. By selling Scuzz Twittly, they are selling their beer. But the crossover elements here are amazing. Country/Western fans and people who hate country music are going to be hooked. I suspect this to go huge and viral in three days: http://youtu.be/56duVYLsd4Q I think this is a brilliant and bold marketing campaign. I think it will be huge. |

Has the well been marked as a shrine - and your bottling plant been registered as a religious institution?
Have you sued for tax exempt status for this monopole-ist faith?

I am looking into it. If I can combine faith and work--that should be good...

This is pretty rough. Not for kids or those who might be offended by coarse and vulgar language and adult themes. It is an advertisement for a mainstream national company, Pabst Blue Ribbon. If it turns you off to their company forever, they have made a decision already that they don't care.
It is a fake ad by a fake country music star, Scuzz Twittly, and for a fake product. http://youtu.be/phJpKG6Lqi0 It is designed to send you to their website or to their other music and comedy videos which will send you to their website. I am surprised. This is exactly the idea we have been working on for the last few years, to advertise a product (my magic show) laterally by promoting other products both real and fake--medicine oil, magnetized water, Wonder Elixer, Sap-Rising Spring Tonic, and Hard Rock Candy. We have just been setting up the videos and content that will lead spectators into a relationship with us, and I find that Disney is doing a Second Screen approach to The Little Mermaid, and Pabst is doing a lateral marketing campaign. It makes me feel I am headed in the right direction. Does anyone else have an interest in marketing and branding using lateral marketing? |

I've seen the same thing going on with Anchorman 2 (Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy movie) and Dodge products. My wife saw one of the ads and said, "What the heck is that?! Is Dodge promoting Will Ferrell's movie or is Will Ferrell trying to sell Dodge Durangos?" The Ron Burgundy character even appeared on talk shows and confessed that he thought that the Durango was a terrible car!
Incidently, Anchorman 2 (a mediocre movie at best) so far has a worldwide gross of $166M (with a production and ad budget of $95M), and Dodge Durango sales are up 40-60%, depending on who you talk to. As long as this kind of marketing gets results, you can expect to see more of it. In other words, charlatanry is here to stay. Some might say it never left.

It's not so much the charlatanry--it is lateral marketing. That is extremely important as a concept for advertising through social media.

Another piece of interesting lateral marketing: a new Hulu show about the perils of factory farming, Farmed and Dangerous--produced by Chipotle!

I could question how you say these things with a "straight face," but your face is never straight -- which is part of the charm and magic.
