I'm looking for the best Tommy Wonder Ring Box or equivalent currently available for purchase. I have one from Tabman just shortly before he left us and the workmanship is terrific, however the box was a bit too small (it won't hold the folded card and allow it to move) and the button came off. Tabby wanted to replace it but fell ill and now I am grateful that the box serves as more of a memento of him - a legendary craftsman and really awesome guy who I only had the pleasure of knowing for a short period of time.
So having said that, I'm looking for a replacement. It seems there are a small number of options available that I know of. Can anyone comment on the below and/or provide leads on any others? http://jramagicworkshop.com/ http://www.emagictricks.co.uk/product_in......_id=5504 Donny Buckley/RNT 2/Magpie Lipincott Box http://www.rnt2.com/magpie-magic-lippinc......5W415Ev0 I hear Elmwood magic used to have one but I can't find it anymore I heard Brian Cook, magiccrafter.com made one recently |

Can't go wrong with Brian Cook. He made me mine and I love it! If you want it a little bigger he'll make it a little bigger.

The ones made by Joe Anderson in the first link are absolutely phenomenal. I have one and love it.

These are beautiful. Can someone please clarify something for me? This box os tipped over and the card appears to fall out into your waiting hand, but the box is not then shown empty like the Kennedy or Clarity box.
Is this correct? |

Based on product description and Tommy Wonder's description, it appears that the box from "emagictricks" is constructed closest to what Tommy indicated.

I had 2 made a few years ago by an amateur magician/woodworker. I think he only charged me $30 or $40 for the pair. He just looked at the instructions in the book and made them as instructed. He indicated it really was not that difficult. I'm certainly no woodworker, but it sounds like if you have someone with the proper tools and who knows hot to use them, it shouldn't be that difficult or expensive.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Tabman mentioned to me that while Tommy used the box as constructed in the book, he had to repair it a lot because the silk hinge would give out. Hence the options above, using brass hinges, are very tempting, provided the lid shuts as quickly and freely as the silk hinge does.

My Brian Cook ringbox is made exactly to the specifications from the book, minus the silk hinge. I have a little brass piano hinge.

Come to think of it, that's what my guy used too. Worked like a charm...too bad I couldn't learn the fold.

Swann101,
That is correct! JMN

Yep. Somehow I missed that comment. You can NOT show the box empty at any time. However, the illusion of the card falling from the box is VERY strong. Probably the best there is for this type of effect. Presented properly, there should be no problem.

David Regal Crystal Box is outstanding especially if you use Tommy Wonder's closing line "What I don't understand is how you did put YOUR signature on MY card"
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations

Lawrence O, you are correct. I was fortunate to see David's Crystal Box at a lecture after he just received them. The illusion is near perfect!

I would like to make the Tommy Wonder ringbox myself. He explained in his book a lot of details about all the sizes and what materials were used to make the ring box. for example, he explained that he used veneer wood to keep the size of the box to a minimum. But not exactly HOW the box can be constructed. I would like to know how this had been done, especially how the lid has been constructed to create the narrow top.
Does anyone have tried to make this ring box and maybe have some instructions/tutorial available to make my own? |

You need to know a decent amount of woodworking.
it would be a lot easier to learn some basic woodworking and then build the box than trying to learn it all at once for just the box. You'll probably need to build some jigs to create the right angles(and calculating those angles based on the dimensions you want), then chisel or planes to transfer that angle onto the thin veneer. Since you'll be making your own jigs, that's why general woodworking knowledge is needed. |
