Look over the first few pages of spooky
90%+ of the topics are on products - announcements / praises / partial reviews / one liners that keep it going - with some occasionally posting some more on theory on principles etc that may be of some use towards theory and general bizarre concepts I noted this as I started that Astarte thread - and I had this flashback to when I first started coming to the Café and the discussions were more akin to what happened in that thread - sharing ideas, theory, practical applications, and the art and science of some of the things we could try to achieve. Funny thing is as soon as I noted its vibe the postings stopped except for the curator and I.... Even when my name is associated with a product that makes it to market - I hope those who have them note my contributions are to show its general uses and show how those concepts can be applied to other similar gadgets and so on. I'd give an example but I decided I will not mention any specific product for this post Even though I hear the pope got lambasted for calling out capitalism (and don't get me wrong - I collect collect collect and make and make and make) - he and other thought leaders have noted we may have been losing our way in choosing the material over all other forms of appreciating existence. So, my holiday reflections are for me at least to try to keep on getting the gang to speak theory, history, art and science themes for spooky and contribute same to threads on products in that vein. I hope you all reflect on your own interactions in this realm if you have been sucked into materialism that is unbalanced - or a balanced one of having some dynamic balance to remember the roots of what magic and mystery is all about. Note: Don't get me wrong - it's a balance I struggle with too - I can feel and see the pressures of consumerism constantly from when I first check my emails and have 14-20 offering the latest magic gizmo, group ons, deals, and so on.... It's wild. Not an Aside: I love the spooky forum - favourite place in the Café! Hence it's the only place I'm posting this reflection as I care about it!!!!! Happy holidays to you and yours!!!!!!

You've got me thinking about reflections. A reveal in a mirror would be so nice.

Thanks for these thoughts Dr. Spektor.
I read your comment in Ed's "Why" post and was compelled to pop back over here and offer my two cents. As someone new to the Café and to the serious pursuit of magic, I and I'm certain others like me have benefited greatly from watching and reading these threads. There is such a wealth of information in the spooky forum, personally I've endeavored to thoroughly explore the archives here and in the crypt before piping up in some of the more heady discussions. It seemed to be the best use of my time and also the more "respectful" path given some of the hard thought that has gone into many of these threads. (That being said I have to say that I also enjoy reading about the latest and greatest from the likes of Professor BC, Vic, Roth and Chris at Alchemy Moon etc. I find the call to action Chris is issuing in his Moon forums to be particularly noteworthy.) So, on behalf of the lurkers or those of us that are finding our footing within the forum, I 'd like to wish you, and the other serious posters a very happy holiday. I do read your posts. Thank you for the information and inspiration. I look forward to contributing to the type of forum of which you and Ed speak, especially as topics cross my areas of expertise. Ho ho ho..... and to all a good night! |

I wish my weed guy was as on time as yours. Im half watching a movie with dinosaurs, will ferell and the dude from east bound and down. The mysteries of the universe are completely passing me by.
also.... (prepare for analogy) Every so many years I say - why don't we ever go camping? ...then we go fkn camping. We remember things the way we choose - rarely the way they were. The percentages don't really change. There may be more or less in numbers but normally there are the same percentages of cool, not cool, ridiculous, etc -- in any situation. whats awesome about posting at 2am is you can keep editing it without ****ing ppl off. so holiday relflections.... I hope my buddy Howard Blackwell comes home from the middle east - not shot. I hope ppl keep putting up with me here. I hope you all do a kickstarter to buy me doppleganger - and I hope this continues to be a place of interest, tolerance and awesome. |

I must have had a little too much Xmas cheer, as I just read Zoopdogs last line as "a place of incest, tolerance and awesome", HCQ (here chuckling quietly).
Doc, I'm more than happy to discuss history, theory, art, science as it pertains to Bizarre Magic (or Dark Mentalism, my preferred appellation for the art I perform). If we are going to get serious for a moment, has anyone considered modulating group emotions via triggering neural and hormonal releases? For example, in much of the esoteric training I've done in the shut-eye world, much more emphasis is placed on things like having you particpants module their breathing, posture and thoughts, than I have ever seen a mentalist do. I see some mentalists pay lip service to getting their particpants to stand a particular way, or look the performer in the eyes, but this is little more than window dressing. I have read about magicians messing up on purpose, and a theory that this causes oxytocin release. The oxytocin then causes a greater bonding between performer and particpant or observer. The audience start wanting the magician to suceed. We have noted how a near miss in mentalism is often stronger, or percieved as making the performance more real, but could oxytocin have a role in this? With haunted magic, aren't we trying to trigger some mind adrenal response, through triggering spirit bells, etc at opportune times? Some folks prefer to not even know themselves exactly when a bell will go off so it is a surprise to them too. Then if the performer is genuinely shocked or scared, then they have a genuine adrenal responce, and this is communicated to the participants via sight, sound, scent, sensation, etc. This in turn ramps up the particpants emotion too. But we need a cool down after this too, maybe some endorphins, via a cathartic moment at the end of the performance, so the audience / particpants go away feeling they have had a good time. Any thoughts on structure a performance with these ideas in mind? Say a spooky favourite like a seance, or spook show? |
