Just as Christian is The Curator, I am Neil Tobin, Necromancer.

It's my trademark. It internally defines who I am as a performer in that, while it generally encompasses a variety of magical or psychic gifts, it includes a special alliance with the spirit world. Of course, since the word is archaic, most audiences aren't acquainted with it (and readers of fantasy fiction and players of Dungeons & Dragons have differing definitions); this could be seen as a liability. But I think that's part of its allure: it's intriguing and captures attention, which then gives me the opportunity to define it for my audiences.

Best of luck on your own journey—
Neil

I bill myself as a magician and actor presenting a theatrical creation of paranormal phenomena.

My business card has "The Haunted One" in prominent text and "Paranormal Theatre" as subtext.

Speaking about necromancy, this XVIth/XVIIth century necromancy sator skull sold for several thousands euros some years ago.
I have a similar one at the Surnateum.

Uncanny. My last CAT scan looked just like that.

So Neil, have you always billed yourself this way, or were you originally billed as a magician or mentalist and then changed to Necromancer?

Do you think it is beneficial to bill yourself as a magician until you are well established and then change your title to something that reflects your performance more specifically?

Thanks for everyone's responses too.

Do I think being called a magician or mentalist is beneficial in your market so audiences unfamiliar with you know what you do? It certainly can be. And there are places where I am listed under the mentalist category for easy reference, such as in the Gigmasters system. But I still use my Necromancer moniker within it, as it is an essential part of my performing character and differentiates me from other performers of magical and psychic material. I simply cannot perform without it.

Should one establish oneself first as a magician or mentalist in his market before adopting a more colorful and descriptive (though less well-known) name for oneself? Hard to say. I have remained faithful to my unconventional moniker for over a decade, but there are people who first heard of me this year and hired me just the same. So how long I've been using it seems beside the point.

Another thing to think about: it's been my experience that people do not close their eyes tightly or instantly stop listening the moment after your title is pronounced. If it's a title that piques their interest, you may have a brief window in which to explain and entertain. For me, that's a welcome opportunity.

Good luck,
Neil

I think it is important to be on a long term stable in how you call yourself.

Nobody buys "Dark lord John doe" who was 1 year ago "John Doeini, the great illusionist" and before that he was known as "Doezoo the clown". But he started it all 4 years ago as "John the table hopping magician".

I guess I'll go with the obvious: "mystician". It's generic enough to mean almost anything unordinary, really, though I'd like to think it has a certain profundity to it, with less emphasis on generic magic entertainment ("pick a card, any card").

That said though, I'm rather full of it, because at this time I'm nothing more than a hobbyist* whose sleight of hand skills are woeful.

*Not to be confused with a Hobbit. I'd be really hard to mistake for a hobbit.

I think once one wants to make money or get gigs, the importance of clarity and meaning to the titles become more important IMHO - the target audience is the key - just like pro performances - the trump is the audiences enjoyment - not yours - hopefully you can have both!

Are you a Bizarre Magician?

No, but a .damn bizarre individual, I must say...one of a kind!

Speaking of Elvira, having met Cassandra Peterson, she is a big fan of bizarre magic! She really IS a dollbaby, too! Ever seen Elvira without her make-up?

Here is a really good pic:

Myself, I pride myself on being diversive. A label as such does not apply to me. As my magic changes and evolves, The Bizarre is definitely part of it, to be sure. But...ya never know. At a moment's notice, the Sponge Balls CAN come out! Smile

Curses!!! Ed and Dr.S., they put us up to all of this! Just being is easy; thinking, well....is hard. "Grrr, Arg!", to quote BTVS -- L'Hoht My'eem (or however you transliterate that) - it is a futile effort.

What I mean to say, please, do let us ALL keep our thinking caps (and wizard hats) on and keep progressing. Be inspired!! Doch! Yosh! Etc!
