Between Silk and Cyanide: A Codemaker's War - Leo Marks.
Excellent, really fascinating and absorbing book. Some knowledge of the SOE (Special Operations Executive during WW2) would make it even more enjoyable. Read the synopsis at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Between-Silk-Cyani......8486780X For much better pricing, get a used copy at Abe Books in the UK: http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/Search......+cyanide |

Here's a book that was written for teenagers that I recently picked up in a public school library, and it was so funny that I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Just finished reading The Tragedy of Arthur: a Novel by Arthur Phillips and (maybe, maybe not) William Shakespeare.
This is a wonderful tour-de-force. The novelist Arthur Phillips tells a story about how his dying father left him the quarto edition of a previously undiscovered Shakespeare play called The Tragedy of Arthur. There's one little problem, though: despite the vetting of scholars and Random House, Arthur knows that his father has had a long history of conning and art forgery. Is the Tragedy of Arthur really about Arthur? All kinds of wonderful games going on in this book; it includes the full text of the play, The Tragedy of Arthur as well as the long introduction that explains the circumstances of the play's finding and also, inevitably, Arthur's life.

"Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt" by Michael Lewis
This one sounded interesting. It tells the story of how several insiders at high-frequency trading firms used speed and automation to gain an advantage over less technologically adept investors.

No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the Surveillance State by Glenn Greenwald.
As engrossing as a suspense thriller, Greenwald talks about how he came into contact with Ed Snowden, the government and press reaction, the reasons why mass surveillance is such a threat to the notion of individual liberty, and debunks several myths and memes. It's a quick, engrossing read, and whatever you think of Snowden or Greenwald, if you have any interest in world or US politics and civil liberties, this is a must read. Greenwald's writing is sharp and engaging throughout. He must have been a formidable litigator. Highly recommended. http://www.amazon.com/No-Place-Hide-Snow......+to+hide

I've just finished reading Tom Rob Smith's Child 44 (2008) and so far it's the best fiction I've read this year.
http://www.amazon.com/Child-Smith-Tom-Ro......ob+smith http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_44 While a work of fiction, it's based on the true story of a post WW II serial killer in Stalin's Soviet Union, where "crime doesn't exist." It provides a dark look at what life was like for the average person under Stalin rule. Horrific. The crimes, the background and the story of the prohibited search for the killer is a page turner. Highly recommended. Looks like it's also being made into a movie this year. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014763/

Letting Go by Philip Roth
In another thread I mentioned that I was in the middle of reading this and that it was laugh out loud funny. That was page 300. Three hundred pages later, no more laughing out loud. But still amazing. This was Roth's first novel, published at age 29 and it's staggering for someone that young. His ear for character is pitch perfect and there isn't a page that isn't filled with real life. It's probably too long, but it's the work of a writer who isn't afraid to see what will happen if he keeps the camera rolling on the difficult scenes. I've read most of Roth and somehow have avoided this one until now. I think this goes onto my list of all-time favorite books.

I read Dave Eggers's Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? in one day this summer. It was the most engaging thing I've read in years.
Don't know if I'll read it again, but for one day, it completely owned me.

"Parallel Journeys" by Eleanor H. Ayer
Synopsis: She was a young German Jew. He was an ardent member of the Hitler Youth. This is the story of their parallel journey through World War II. Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck were born just a few miles from each other in the German Rhineland. But their lives took radically different courses: Helen's to the Auschwitz extermination camp; Alfons to a high rank in the Hitler Youth. While Helen was hiding in Amsterdam, Alfons was a fanatic believer in Hitler's "master race." While she was crammed in a cattle car bound for the death camp Auschwitz, he was a teenage commander of frontline troops, ready to fight and die for the glory of Hitler and the Fatherland. This book tells both of their stories, side-by-side, in an overwhelming account of the nightmare that was WWII. The riveting stories of these two remarkable people must stand as a powerful lesson to us all. |

Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Mo......ary Army
I've been reading this big fascinating book in dribs and drabs over the last few months. I finally made a big push this week to finish it. If you want to understand about modern warfare and warmongering, this book is a must. Spoiler alert: It's worse than you could have imagined. The only problem with the book is that it has not been updated since 2008. Spoiler alert again: Since 2008, it's gotten worse than you could have imagined.
