We North Americans are so arrogant and self righteous that through our obsession with political correctness we have begun to decide who should and shouldnt be offended by what or whom.
It is shameful. Like calling people from tte orient Asians as though it is a race. But for some reason it sounds so nuce and correct as in, " Asian women are beautiful". Or " Asian cuisine". Sadly, average north americans don't know that Asian means Russian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Iraqi, Saudis etc. This isn't the case in Asia. Their Asian Footballer of the Year award a few years back went to a blonde haired blue eyed caucasian player. Why? Because he is Asian. Just like I am North American. Neither of which are races. My point? We've become way, way to sensitive, waaaay to politically correct, and waaaay to carried away in deciding for others what is offensive and what isn't. Who the hell do we think we are anyway? Sheesh. |

Calling people from the orient "Asians" is unnecessarily broad in the name of political correctness, but it doesn't suggest that it is a race; just a place.
With respect to deciding for others what is offensive, I'm not sure what you mean with respect to this story. Anyone with half a brain has to know that some people would be very offended (on their own behalf), and thus it was a colossal example of if nothing else incredibly poor judgment from a corporate public relations executive.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

You're aware that people in South Africa were offended by this too, right? Are they North Americans?

n a written statement. Sacco apologized "for being insensitive to this crisis -- which does not discriminate by race, gender or sexual orientation, but which terrifies us all uniformly -- and to the millions of people living with the virus, I am ashamed." http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/22/world/sacco-offensive-tweet/ Personally, I think it's the stupidity of what she tweeted, considering that she is supposed to be an expert in public relations, that is the essence of the story. |

I refuse to even GO to Facebook today because of it. I STILL get threats...and I really didn't DO anything serious. Who STARTED this Political Correctness crap, anyway? And who are WE to BE offended? Freedom of Speech! What a crock! Have you heard what Kanye has been spewing lately? Nobody is offended by THAT dolt! In my opinion, he and all these other people stirring it up and continuing this shameful practice need to STFU!! Then we get the Duck Dynasty fiasco! Oh the GAYS are offended now! And now we have ANOTHER sh_t storm! Who's next? Let's see...who can we offend...Asians? Hispanics? Native Americans? Oh, I'm part Irish! Let's .piss THEM off! The IRA will be all over it! What a sad state of affairs. This is what the news brings us today. Until the next MAJOR disaster that takes up the whole media, like 9/11 did. Is that what it takes? Are we THAT bored? Friends, we are BLESSED that a major disaster has NOT happened yet. And until it does...we need to really take a hard look at ourselves. Doug |

And, Lobo, lets be honest, anyone with half a brain knows that in todays day and age, when someone says they think Asian women are aattractve or not, they arent talking about a place, they're talking about a certain look - and it ain't Turkmenistan, Yemen, or Kazakhstan. All of whom are proud Asians.

The violent response to Sacco, and many others before her, risks instilling a culture of self-censorship that stifles free expression and mutes unconventional opinions online. Violent responses. For a single stupid statement. "Oh, Doug, why don't you come to FaceBook? Twitter?" Gee, I can't imagine... Doug |

I'm with you Doug. I refuse to join or post on Facebook or Twitter. It's just plain silly. Are folks these days so into themselves that they think other folks like me really care about what they say or think?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

The festive season must be catching up with me - I forgot I'd read the article before - and from here.
As for Facebook and Twitter - I don't do Twitter, but Facebook isn't all that different to here, except you can choose to participate in forums with varying degrees of moderation. Some of the Facebook pages without much moderation could make you scared to leave home, for fear that such people are walking the streets, but I suspect a lot of their cyber swagger masks much more timid real personas. I wonder how many of the people screaming about this woman online, would repeat what they're saying to her face. |
