What are the top three school marketing courses for magicians? I have decided to get back into school marketing for year 2014.

Look for an out-of-print product called "Magic Success Seminars" (sub-titled "Targeting School Shows for Your Success"). This 9 DVD set, with session handouts, is from Steve Hart, Steve Taylor, BJ Hickman, and Jim Snack.

That resource might be helpful to you.

P.S. DynaMike - Joe Romano touches on school shows in his lecture notes, that I mentioned on that other thread.

Mike, the 1st thing you should find out is, do your cities schools even hold school shows. Here in our town they do not. They only hold the free shows by the Police Department and Fire Department. You might even PM Dick Oslund, as he has done school shows for like 50 years through a agent, but he will still know the markets. It is my understanding usually small town schools are the target market, but Dick Oslund can advise you definitely.

In Detroit it was heavy in the 90's. There was a agent who hired different type of entertainers who did school shows in Detroit only. The agency went out of business a few years ago after Detroit shut down so many schools. I have performed in school shows in many suburbs around Detroit, plus Toledo, Ohio. It is time for me to do direct marketing with those cities and townships. Thanks Bill.

Mike,

For a lot of the Libraries you now have to Show Case. And they take part usually in Lansing, Kalamazoo, Flint and sometimes Detroit and a few other areas. And most libraries want you to Theme your Show for each years new theme. I have been asked to Show Case in Lansing this year. Here is the downside the cost is $ 200.00 plus your Hotel and Food if you stay overnight. If they do not hire you then you are out anywhere from
$200.00-$ 400.00. However if you are hired for at least 20 or more libraries then you will make some decent cash. The library market does not pay like it used to. Most Show Cases give you just 10-Minutes to impress them and that is it as they try and have 20-40 performers in the show case.

Mike -
Not a course - but I interviewed Mark Wade, who has 35 years of professional experience entertaining kids, for Entertainment Experts.
Here is a quick clip of an interview about the school market:

Also check out:

We have more of Mark's interview being released in January, including a method he uses to get in contact with principals. Hope the information is of help.

Showcases are a great way to get bookings in many markets. I wish more performance markets and industry events had showcases. The college market still does and it's the basis for it's entire existence. The showcase fee separates the serious from the curious, and is typically a small investment in potential success (bookings) if you have any kind of s decent act.

Several school market trade events recently eliminated their showcases and it's hurt the school market considerably over the past few years.

And if you want to be doing scout shows and blue and gold banquets, make sure to check out my book Blue and Gold at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. Now is the perfect time to read up on it and get marking and learn how to work the scout market year round. =)

I already have it Kyle. As a matter of fact, I have all your products. When you come out with more, I will purchase those too. You know how to write. I never heard any complaints on any of your material.

P.S. Kyle, how did I do?

Mike: Checks in the mail my friend. lol Thanks. I actually am working on a new book now and pretty much have the rough draft done. Just have to find time to go over it, tweak it and get it off to my proofreaders and go from there. It is something I have wanted to do for a while now. fill you in more later.

Ah, the elusive "festival book" we've been hearing about for years? Smile I had been thinking it was just a myth. Smile

I don't have the Scout book but do have the Chair book. It lives up to the claim of being the most comprehensive book on the subject. I would bet the festival book will be too.

NO course is a guarantee. Not for any market.

Magicians are always looking for a magic bullet. Have NO idea how to market or do business.

Best thing most guys can do is to forget ALL the courses and go to take a small business administration course at a local community college. Take marketing courses from an institute which hands out degrees in such things, then take that information and transpose it to your business. Best thing anyone can do to help their future in the business.

I am not joking guys. It is the best money that you can spend.

A VERY large percentage of these courses are put out by guys with a lot of time on their hands because they can't manage to get work in the subject they are teaching courses in!

No matter which course you buy it is going to take a ton of work. No course is going to make it so you don't have to work very hard. You can make it so you work harder AND smarter. Then nobody will be able to stop you.

It is not about gaining or collecting knowledge as it is about how one uses the knowledge in the doing. Not the collecting.
