Got a ton of new magic goodies for Christmas including all the hot new do-dads, but I have to say the item that impressed me the most was the Phoenix Marked Deck Set. Comes with two regular decks, two marked decks and a 2 hour dvd. I know these have been out for a while but I'll admit up front that I've never been a fan of the Phoenix decks. I'm an avid playing card collector but I've always thought the back design of the Phoenix looked a bit hokey. I asked for this set because I'm a huge marked deck fan so I try to collect all the marked decks that come out.
I'll just state up front that the two hour dvd that comes with this set has completely changed my mind about the Phoenix line of cards. Had I watched this back when they first came out, I would have been on board immediately. The first hour + of the dvd walks through the Phoenix line of cards and explains in detail how they are made, why they are different than Bikes, and all the hidden features that I never would have found on my own. If that part of the dvd is not publicly available, it should be because it was eye-opening. First and foremost, the marked deck itself is superb. The markings are perhaps the best hidden of the "easy reader" decks in my collection. Easy to spot by the magician (for right or left handers I might add) but not easy for the spectator to find unlike all the newer decks including The Code (Ray Charles could find those marks), the Ultimate Marked Deck and even Boris' deck (which to date has been my favorite). So if you just want a fantastic marked deck, this is my new go-to choice. Even better, the deck comes with two additional features that I never would have found had I not watched the dvd. Both the backs and the faces have a one-way design. I starred at the backs for about 5 minutes and had absolutely no clue until I watched the secret after which I was almost instantly able to find any card that was turned 180 degrees. Truly amazing. The most amazing design feature is that the faces use the classic Bike faces...but each and ever face has a one-way design built in. I could have studied the faces for a day and never would have found the secret. It's that well hidden. Genius. And perhaps best of all, you don't need to buy the marked deck to get the one-way features as they are built into the design of every Phoenix deck! Finally, the Phoenix decks are all Grade 1 quality, whereas the standard Bikes most of us use are Grade 3 quality. So not only do the Phoenix decks faro perfectly out of the box, you also don't get any misaligned borders and back designs like those that have sadly become common place with Bikes. I could go on and on but needless to say, I'm impressed enough to switch from Bikes to Phoenix cards....something I absolutely swore up and down I would never even consider. |
