Anyone here read the Belgariad and the Mallorean series by David Eddings?
Just curious because of all the hype surrounding LOTR.
I think that Tolkien deserves the credit for really launching the fantasy genre of books, but like all firsts, he was soon surpassed by others who used his ideas as a stepping stone to something better.

Also thought it might be nice to list a few books that you like and the genre they fit into. Listing the genre/general topic of the book will make it easier for the rest of us to pick a couple to read...
Heres a couple to start:

The Belgariad -David Eddings - Fantasy
River God - Wilbur Smith - Story told (mostly) in the first person about Egyptian times
Small Gods - Terry Pratchett - Humourous Social Commentary
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are

Yes, I read most of them and I really enjoyed them a lot as well as stuff by Raymond Feist, Terry Goodkind and the Shannara books by Terry Brooks were good too.
Back in my B.K. days (before kids) when I had time to really get into reading and following a series etc., I loved reading Sci-Fi, Fantasy, action, espionage, just about anything besides "romance" novels!

I think the book club idea may have died. Smile

Anyone with a really strong recommendation of a book worth reading, mentions it here, and someone may decide to check it out and read it.

I've read all the books you mention and I can highly recommend anything by David Gemmell.

The Belgariad is one of my favorite series ever. I am glad you mentioned it. I love Eddings.

I recommend that you read

The Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.

Ah! Both David Gemmell and the Dragonlance Chronicles are truly awesome books! I suggest the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. He's my favorite! Very very funny fantasy novels.

The David Eddings books are awesome! Another author worth your time is Stephen R. Donaldson - he wrote the Thomas Covenant books. Also, The Books of Swords by Fred Saberhagen.

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan - epic fantasy that's been dragged out far too long, but it's still fun to read

The Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin - brutal epic fantasy

*and my current favorite*

The Malazan Books of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson - each book is a self-contained story with some recurring characters from previous books. The first book just throws you in at the beginning, so it's somewhat confusing, but stick with it and you'll get sucked in just like I was.
