This reminds me of when Psycho Sid in WCW jumped from the top ring post and snapped his leg on the landing. It was gruesome...

In regards to the first fight; when I watched it I thought Silva was being a a**hole and my opinion of him went down a lot. I was happy when he was KO'd.
He is (was?) still a great fighter so I'm sad about his leg. Relatedly, my opinion of Rousey went down A LOT during the latest season of TUF. Part of me was hoping Tate would win; but it's just hard to see that happening anytime soon. ...If it's on the ground she's got the armbar. (BUT, I haven't seen the full fight yet, and Tate went three rounds which is very impressive).

Yes, I respect General's position but I still feel it was wrong. I feel the same about what Ali did to Cooper and Foreman and Leonard did to Duran. Although none of it was as embarrassing and foolish as Silva's display.
Except maybe Sean Avery's jumping jacks. |

I've seen this same break in a Muay Thai match before and the other guy and some in his corner laughed, which I thought was awful and unsportsmanlike. I mean, stuff happens, but one doesn't have to be a jerk about it.

Simmer down. I stand by my comments. I have no respect for Anderson Silva, and you have no authority over me to make me feel any other way about it. Anderson is the ex champ, and I never respected him because of the way he showed disrespect towards his opponents. He got knocked out because he was acting like a clown and disrespecting Chris' atheletic ability.
What does it matter to you if I have no respect for Silva? Are you going to try and start a flame war over it. Lol Quote: On 2013-12-29 12:15, General_Magician wrote:

How does the number of boxers and boxing matches in a given year compare with the number of MMA fighters and matches in a given year? I assume that's the kind of basic information that anyone who thinks the data are clear would know off the top of his head.

I know that in our boxing club the overwhelming majority of members were training for MMA matches, not boxing ones. They'd come to boxing practice and then go to jiu-jitsu the next day. The casinos have sanctioned MMA matches all the time and the rare boxing matches that I see are done in community centers now. So, at least locally, boxing is just not done as much as MMA these days.

I think Doyle hit it on the head with his assessment of strategy. An MMA fighter has more options available.
Again, I'm not disparaging boxing. I prefer trading shots to grappling, but that's my taste. My Grandpa's best friend owned our largest local boxing club and he and his son were golden gloves champions. I love boxing. The only reason I brought up the comparison at all is because I think it's just alarmist to say that MMA is this awful blood sport when there's just not the data there to say that it's any more dangerous than other sports like boxing or football. That's my whole point. It's not my intention to say that boxing is bad, because I love boxing. It is my intention to say that MMA isn't that bad. IMO, it's probably about as dangerous as driving a car.

As I was saying the other day. It seems to me, picking and backing winners at the track or whatever, is one of the most exciting forms fun on the planet. Its no fun picking losers though and doing your brains. Taking the risk itself is exciting. When one risks anything there is excitement in it, or rather comes from it. They risk being injured in fighting. While we don't like to see anyone get hurt, that is the game they choose to play. Hard luck.

Ahh I hated trading shots, especially against taller opponents who had longer reach and kicked very well. A lot of the times, I would try to catch them off guard and take the sparring match to the ground immediately when I did MMA just as something fun to do and to stay in shape. If my sparring opponent was taller than me, with better arm reach, I especially took the match to the ground to even the playing field a little bit. It's not fair that he should have a reach advantage while I don't, so, the playing field has to be made level again, which means, going for the take down. I loved rolling on the mat. I practiced a lot on my take downs because I am not a tall guy and fortunately, one of the instructors at the gym I worked out at was a small guy too, so he was very good at take downs and gave me a few pointers. It's easy to throw in feints and fakes against an opponent to trick them into giving you an opening for a take down.

I'm good at getting punched, but ground-fighting makes me claustrophobic. (Technically, it made me agoraphobic- but claustrophobic is close enough). I learned some ground-fighting but only because I wanted to know how to get out and get up. Still, I did like doing blood chokes.

I don't like trading punches or ground fighting; I don't like fighting at all.
I like an attacker to think they are about to hit me and then find themselves out of commission. ...obviously that doesn't work against a trained opponent in an agreed upon fight though.

Silva knows the risks.
He has done much better than most. It is unfortunate, but it is the nature of the game. Safety precautions of course should always be the priority.

This injury is hardly one to condemn the sport over. Silva threw a kick, it got checked, and his leg broke. Broken bones happen in all contact sports and honestly are not the major concern in my opinion. Breaking ones leg on a checked kick is akin to a boxer breaking his hand on a punch that is blocked or goes high off the head.
I'm also a lifelong fan of boxing and a longtime fan of MMA and honestly, in my opinion, the potential for long term, life altering damage, is much higher in boxing. |
