I suspect that he'll be back whether it's a good idea or not. Silva strikes me as a guy who won't know when to walk away. Which, if true, just goes to show that despite their differences, MMA and boxing have similarities, too.

Why wouldn't he train to fight again? It does not shock me at all. The man is a warrior. Like him or not he was one of the best in the world at what he does.

1) He took a lot of punishment against Sonnen.
2) He's lost two fights in a row. 3) He's pushing 40. 4) He just got a serious injury. He said immediately after the first Weidman fight that he was done...didn't want the rematch. But he couldn't stay away. Now he's got a second lost and a jacked-up leg. He's a big fan of Muhammad Ali; I think he's going out the same way.

Me either, but it's still amazing to me how resilient human beings are. It reminds me of a few of our guys in our military services who survived IED blasts with missing leg and would go through months or years of therapy and get a prosthetic leg, then turn right around, stay in the military, pass air assault school and just redeploy right back into a combat zone, fighting a war with prosthetic leg. The Army let them redeploy. I think there are two cases of this that I read about in the news. Honestly, I am not sure I could do that if I suffered that kind of injury. Unless, of course, it had something to do with magic, something I really enjoy and have my heart in, then I would find a way to perform magic. I guess I am more of an artist than a warrior, but then again, probably some of the best warriors in history have also been artists. But I am not so sure I would be so anxious to go back into a situation where I face the threat of getting blown up, shot, seriously wounded after suffering something like that already. Some people do it despite serious injury and set back and you have to respect them for it. I guess for those who truly have their heart in it, they will overcome those setbacks and injuries and find a way to fight again. I guess we can all learn something from the warrior spirit eh? I know I learned a lot from it from my time serving and you can see that warrior spirit in the UFC as well.

You're right general, it is very hard to do.
As a youth I played competetive soccer representing my town. One game there was a 50/50 ball in the air and two of us went in hard for the header. His forhead hit my face hard. Quite a lot of blood. I played many more years but any challenge in the air was difficult for me after that. One must be fearless. Legs have been broken badly in tackles at the professional level, and the injured players have returned and been successful teammates if no longer solid tacklers. But in the octagon, you've got arms legs. And if you're no longer willing to stick that leg out with ferocity, you'll be at a huge disadvantage to say the least. Silva may have been a warrior. And his leg may heal. He might walk without a cane, he might eschew the cane and become a sprinter or a marathon runner. But, will he kick someone as hard as he can with the same leg in the octagon? Doubtful. Possible, but doubtful. Snd if he does, I'll be the first person here applauding his tenacity and courage. If he doesn't- no shame whatsoever. All good things come to an end. |

Bruce Lee overcame paralysis before hitting his peak, after being told he'd never walk again.
I think age can be overcome, look how long Randy Couture remained one of the best. Remember George Foreman's come-back? I don't know if Silva will come-back. I don't know how long it would take and what that time away would do to his game. One of my favorite things was when he silenced his critics in the Sonnen rematch, so I hope he makes one more successful run and then hangs it up on top. Like I said, don't know if he will but I hope he does.

In boxing, age can be overcome, but it's a lot harder if one relies primarily on speed, like Roy Jones, Ali, or Sugar Ray Leonard, than if one relies primarily on power, like Foreman. I wouldn't say that anyone "can't" do something, but I strongly suspect that when Silva hangs them up, there will be an overwhelming general consensus that it should have happened sooner.
