Tommy Emmanuel, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xZa-B19qQ8 Brilliant or self-indulgent? Maybe both?

Plucking great.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Nice! I would put it in the "brilliant" category. The harmonics alone were worth the watch. Thanks!
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"

For contrastular purposes, here's Jeff Beck giving a very different interpretation of the song.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats |

Then I saw a double bill concert, featuring McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra followed by the Jeff Beck band. As expected, Mahavishnu was impressive ... but Jeff Beck blew me away! Beck conveyed more emotion with one bent note than McLaughlin did with 100 fast runs. |

I loved it.
I don't understand the "self-indulgent" question. Bazinga! |

It's kind of interesting to watch the evolution of TE's performance of the song through the years. I know almost nothing about guitar playing, but it seems to me the performance becomes more and more self-indulgent and show-offy with each succeeding year. But I've been playing this pretty much non-stop all day.
The Jeff Beck version was awesome too. What a great standard from Harold Arlen. Just for fun, major songs composed by Arlen. Some of them were surprises to me, as in, "oh, he wrote that one, too?" "A Sleepin' Bee" – lyrics by Harold Arlen and Truman Capote "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" – lyrics by Johnny Mercer "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" – lyrics by Johnny Mercer "As Long as I Live" – lyrics by Ted Koehler "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" – lyrics by Ted Koehler "Blues in the Night" – lyrics by Johnny Mercer "Come Rain or Come Shine" – lyrics by Johnny Mercer "Ding-Dong! Tommy Emmanuel's playing is a style that some will find indulgent and stepping all over the melody. Others will find it genius. The skill level is amazing.
For me it felt like he wasn't really connected to the music... more like an extremely exceptionally talented guy playing out his days in a Vegas casino lounge. |

I really love Tommy Emmanuel's playing. His choice of music is all over the map and thinking 'how can I add to this, and make it say something new?'. His brother Phil is also phenomenal ... listen to their duet "Town Hall Boogie" a Joe Maphis tune. I feel he is connected to the music; so I disagree a little with Tom. In music however, to each his own .... stepping all over the melody is OK with me ... not OK for others. As an aside, I didn't know Arlen wrote 'Lydia the tatooed Lzdy'. All this time I thought it was Groucho Marx who wrote it! Lynn
