Historically the teams are even in face-to-face matchups- each has won eight games out of sixteen played against each other. Seattle won the last meeting in 2012. And New England has had some notable chokes in recent Super Bowls. Remember the Giants? Lobo- not to be a nitpicker- but a point spread is not a prediction any more than the over/under reflects the actual total score that bookmakers foresee. (Both numbers are simply created in the hope that they will balance out the betting for both teams.) Come on, commit yourself. Who is going to win the games you mentioned.? |

Both numbers are occasionally adjusted when the bookmakers' prediction of the betting public's proclivities proves to be amiss. |

Yes, you are making a prediction but in fact you are giving a choice of options which are frequently adjusted to keep things even as betting trends change in the days leading up to the game. I did like Lobo's admission, though, that he's not really concerned with who's going to win, but who's going to cover. This is also where a bit of hedging can come in handy. Personally, I don't think anyone does predictions as wonderfully as Criswell did. From his book, Criswell Predicts! From Now Until the Year 2000: Quote:

I agree with Mastermindreader that the Seahawks will be triumphant.

Predicting who will cover offers no more of an out than predicting who will win. Generally less, in fact. It's easy to pick a favorite to win, but I need, for instance, Stanford to win by a touchdown or more.

I'm still trying figure out why you (apparently) thought picking the right team to win was more of a prediction than picking the right team to cover.
I'm leaning Denver over Seattle in the Super Bowl, but of course I'll wait to see what the Thought Dial says.

But if Slim's Thought Dial picks Denver, Seattle will be the sure bet. Denver will need to do better, though, then they did in their only game (preseason) against Seattle this year, which they lost 40 to 10. |
