Years ago a fellow showed me a wonderful "wash" of the hands during which a coin was concealed. It allowed you to apparently show both hands empty, while secretly retaining a coin. The sequence was a little longer than Bobo's Change-Over Pass, but fairly easy to do.
Unfortunately, I've forgotten the details. Can someone recommend a good source for this? |

Hi art,
Try Michael Ammar's "Wiped Clean." ![]() Good and effective way to casually show both hands empty in the action of rubbing them. Very nice, angle proof, and probably one of the best methods, IMHO. ![]() I believe "Wiped Clean" is taught in Coin Magic Volume 2 by David Stone, and also in the book "The Magic of Michael Ammar". Hope that helps. -Mb

I use Kainoa Harbottle's 'Spread and Wiped Clean'. And not just because of the fun name.

I like the one Michael Vincent uses on his DVD set. It's not overdone, but gets the point across.

Less is more for my use of this. In winter I talk about dry cracked hand.
Other time I mention A. massage B. cold hand (mine do get cold-nerves) C. "I wash my hand, on that". (Referring to a previously mentioned subject) Harris

Not to stir things up (but I know its going to!) but my opinion is that Hand washing is unnecessary hand movement used to apparently make your hands appear empty. Why run if you aren't being chased? People are going to burn your hands when you do that, and either think you got a nervous twitch, or you are just clever in hiding the coin. We tend as magicians to justify our movements, and say things like we are just flexing our palms, or just rubbing the hands together to warm up, but really, what do you think the spectators say? I cant answer that because I won't hand wash (incoin magic terms)but what do YOU think? Do you ever see anyone rub their hands together in real life? Unless of course they want to control the world or some other nefarious action....OK just sayin', now its your turn...

^ I agree with Doc.
The best "Hand Wash" I've ever seen is David Neighbors'; but it looks more like simply excercising his hands to get ready to do Coin Magic.

Here's another vote for Dave Neighbors-- he does a quick "1-2 and done". It's not overdone the way some others do. The action should be a 'non-move', if that makes sense.

Since most of my programs are like mini monologues, the hand wash can be worked in for me.
Also mixed in with the comments are some R. Subt... and other things.... works a lot better than ... this is just a regular deck of cards... or LOOK....my hands are empty... Harris who once thought about surgically adding a 4th layer of skin...then found out about ___________ and still 2 old too know everything

I agree with Michael.
Overdone hand washing just looks like "I'm so clever that you can't see the coin". I think it's better to use techniques that convince people that the coin is gone. It's here that my DBTP move comes into play, because they can see the empty hand right after the false put, or take or ROV... Now if I want to transfer the coin, a subtle muscle pass is a winner (for me) ! |

Your stuff is wonderful and inspiring to this magi. When I first saw a coin magician (Goshman) back in 76, I knew nothing about magic. These days I know even less. Harris now and zen, I get it right

A naturally held position of the hands goes a long way in transmitting the idea that the hands are empty.

Funny, I might do a quick hand wash to begin an effect, to show my hands empty to begin with and as a sorta get-ready action that sends the subliminal message that all is fair.
![]() I think it's alright if used sparingly and not over-done, as I might see most people do it. A quick rub of the hands is all that is needed to give the appearance of the hands being empty, before or after. ![]()
