Hi!
I am truly sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong sub-forum but I tried to find a suitable one to no avail. I was wondering how you guys organize your effects. I've only been into magic for two years and I'm having a hard time keeping track of progress, props, requirements, setup and most importantly the tricks themselves. I would love to have a database with effects sortable on props, style, and with comments, explanation and sources. Is there such a thing? A piece of software maybe? I've been trying to use Excel but I can't seem to figure out how to do it best.. Kind regards! |

I don't know about anything purpose built for magic, but I use Zoterofor a lot of things. It's free and works with most browsers. You could database tricks routines and tag them any way you saw fit.

I have a list of all the tricks I can do.
and I want to start filming all my tricks. cause I have all sorts of ideas for different tricks or variations on tricks, but these ideas come and go without me ever learning them properly. so my plan is to start a YouTube channel and just upload performance videos. and then I can make a seperate sheet of notes for each video to write any tips and setup I need. |

I use index cards in a recipe box. I can keep them alphabetized, there is room on the card for the name, a one line description, list of props if needed. Plus, when I want to put a set together to perform I can cross reference and just grab the 8 or 10 cards I need and play with the order. I always mark the index cards with a theme title so I can group them when I want a set. Packs small and travels well. Cheap too.

I too was curious how others keep things organized. I have a folder on my desktop for digital goodies (PDFs, videos, scripts) and a journal for my own thoughts, ideas and effects. The recipe box idea sounds like a great idea. I think I might need to implement this myself. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure my list is much smaller than most people's here. However, I've done a fair amount of database work in my life, and I think that's definitely the direction to go. I would create categories, setups needed, and such for each effect. Would certainly simplify designing routines and such. |

Access database with loads of fields so I can list the effect, sleight etc as well a book and page reference. Its time consuming but something I'm pleased I have. Its probably a litte over complex for what I need but I'm a bit of a computer nerd.

Just a small Victorian chest holding about 20 regular decks, a few collectible decks, a treasured 'fortune tellers book of days' (anyone else perform this?) and a wallet to keep a few old faves from getting tatty (mcdonalds, monte, ricochet, and a quartet card).
Oh. And a load of drawers contains thousands of pounds worth of dealer items from the early days of being a magic junkie! Should get rid of it all really. I never use any of it. But digging through it occasionally, usually while slightly tipsy, is awesome! And recently, another performer fooled the hell out of me with something I bought years ago, and never used. Sometimes you have to see an effect done well to appreciate it! K |

I keep individal set in Vaultz brand pencil boxes (individually in baggies with effect marked on baggie) not sure you have Vaultz availible over where you live but Im sure amazon or the like sells them.
Also, check out the subforum "where to put it all" under "close up workers" - Tons of good info there as well

I started entering all my magic into a Filemaker database, which I use for props instructions, videos, photos, links to online videos, URL links, etc.
Some of the fields allow me to enter category, my proficiency level, date, price, where the gimmick and or instructions are stored, comments, practice level, PDFs , Word, Excel. I wrote this database for my own use. It's very easy with FileMaker. No programming knowledge is necessary. There is also a magic database available for sale. I think it's called MagicBase. I downloaded the free trial and tried it out. It's well done and covers a lot of what a magician may need, including customer lists, contracts, letters, etc. I didn't buy it because, I wrote my own, customized for what I need. But it is also written using FileMaker. but you don't need the FileMaker application in order to use it.

I think that it's better on the smartphone. I tried on notepads, pc apps and browser apps, excel files and the smartphone is the way. You have the thing all day on you. Some apps even let you export to pdf so you can print them. You can input and read any time of the day, anywhere.
I have an Iphone and I use a app called HandBase where you can create categories, checkboxes, etc and even put a photo of the prop. I have a checkbox that reads: "Does it need a table?" and others as "Size" (close-up/stage/parlour). Also since I perform for kids and adults I added that filter too. |

Is anyone using s-note? I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Both came with S-Note (and S-Pen) and have several premade templates or you can make your own. I personally havent tried it but wonder if anyone else has and was it successful?

Is the database (or list) going to be used primarily at home or on the road?
For me it's at home. I prefer a computer or a tablet. A smartphone is nice if you need to access your database away from home. The ideal usage is on both. When I change my FileMaker database on my computer, it syncs with my Ipad via WiFi. I also have the capability to access it through the Internet but I haven't set that up.
