Kinda long post, Please read the first portion it's my main concern. The rest is if you have extra time to read.
I am gonna perform with the IT to my friends in a bar. I'll probably use the SPP (Mesika thread) and use a couple tricks with the Fearson hookup using Vectra line. The bar is fairly dim lighted but there is are small spot lights around the corner of where I'll perform. Should I give my back to spotlights or face them when performing? Mesika and Jon said to give your back to the light, but I tried in look in the bathroom mirror with fluorescent light facing me and the thread seemed visible both ways. What are the best lighting conditions for IT if I am using it vertically or horizontally? What are your suggestions? I have also got another question. I just received Centrifugal by Magick Balay. The DVD and the explanation was amazing and helpful, but I really can't find any use for the ITR since I have the SPP and I use Fearson hookup which also seemed more convenient for the Centrifuging coin trick. I also don't wear buttoned shirts, I only wear polo shirts. I tried hooking up the ITR like in Invisible by Damien Savina but the thread kept breaking on me and even when I managed to hook it up I didn't know what tricks to do. I use loops for haunted deck (I only use loops for animation, can I levitate with it?) and the levitating ring is just a pain in the ***...especially that I don't have any rings and I use small brass rings to practice, which keeps breaking the thread. So what are other suggestions on tricks to do with the ITR and what are some recommended DVDs for ITRs and Levitation. Also are we allowed to sell stuff on the Café? If so, how? I got Pure smoke from Ellusionist and I am so disappointed. I am willing to sell it for any price, it has extra box of cartridges, to get my hands on Vapr. Another question is that my 20th birthday is after 9 days; Is there anything special and magical I can prepare for the event? I'll Probably either get together with a couple friends or maybe chill a at a bar. Also is there a magic trick to help me get kissed by 20 girls for my birthday? my friend did it for her 21st and she it was easy for her, but then again she's a girl. Sorry for the long post and thanks very much in advance. I love the community on this site and how everyone is helpful, respectful, and supportive. I wish one day I'll be the one giving advice to new ambitious magicians. I am a fairly new magician, but I am hoping magic will change my life or at least make me more likeable because I have Social Anxiety and ADHD which destroys my social life. I used the last 2 week break from college to try and learn as much magic as possible. I still need to work on my misdirection and showmanship. I am just trying to improve my skills and routines especially that I can't do much with card since my hands are really small (My glove size is XS from women section...embarrassing). Also any suggestions on tricks to flirt with girls or pick them up (please don't say Rich Furgson's book). (I know this is not a social website but rather a magic community they is more about technicalities, but you're the only ones I could ask given your background and experience) I was thinking maybe using the "Blackmail" prediction trick by Bobby Motta, maybe tell a girl (jokingly): "You...What's your name? You won't believe this but I kinda dreamt about you. Not in a creepy way don't worry. You came up to me and gave me a three digits number (or maybe her phone number) and said that we're destined to kiss. Alright I have a sealed envelope here that I wrote the number on. Now You say any three digit number, that's a one in a thousand chance, and I if it's the same then my dream was right and we should kiss." So what do you guys think and what are your suggestions? P.S. (If anyone knows any good tricks or gimmicks that are not very hard (especially for my hand size) but very effective and gets great reactions please let me know). Maybe something self working or that has a good gimmick. I don't mind practicing but I get frustrated easily. I a ordered The Haunted Doll and Regeneration, hopefully won't be disappointed. Please I know I might get some criticism but if it's not constructive criticism, please keep it to yourself. One day you were on my shoe. If you read this far then I truly thank you again for your time, and will try to give back to the Café as much as I can. Keep making the world a better place Thanks, Mo |

There is also an area where you may post items you wish to buy or sell. The reason for the 50 posts is to keep the curious away from secrets gained over the years. There is so much on the Internet nowadays. We do not want to contribute to this steady stream of information. Welcome to the Café. Maybe some members familiar with thread work will PM you to discuss your valid questions. Magically yours. Ray

Sounds like you are trying to run before you can even walk. I say that because you have not experimented enough with the products to know when and how to use them. Study the information that comes with the equipment and work with it.
It seems from your comments you will not listen to any advices anyways, so why should we give it. You only wear certain close, you mention what the information given to you is unbelievable. The items are breaking because you are to rough with them. This type of magic takes weeks and months to learn correct. Then you have to test each environment yourself. There are some rules, but as in life it is not set in stone because every place a small changes that change the outcome. As far as meeting people, be yourself and be kind and friendly in your personal life and magic life. |

Not only are you trying to run before you can walk with magic, but with girls too! I'm 21 and started magic about 1 & 1/2 years ago, so I was pretty much in the same shoes as you. Magic has never helped me get women. I do both salsa dance and magic and neither have directly helped me get women. The way in which they have helped is by giving me greater chance to chat with people, which gives me greater communications skills, which makes ME more attractive to women. So what if you get a woman to kiss you - then what? My advice: use magic to have fun and connect with people - and this will naturally work towards the goals you seek.
As for IT work, I have no experience in it. It takes a lot of work to get it perfect and I'd rather spend that time elsewhere for now. Learn plenty of card and coin stuff from the basic books (RRTCM, Bobo etc.), some miscellaneous close up stuff and a bit of mentalism. Then your creativity will become better and you won't need to ask for ideas of what to levitate! Your misdirection and showmanship come from performing for people. Learn some easier stuff first that allows you to perform. My best advice for you is to join a social club of some kind. I do salsa dancing and it is such a great place to test magic out on people. You don't know them as well as old friends, so there's less pressure to do well, but they know you well enough to like you already. Find a club that does something you enjoy (don't just go there to "pick up" women), enjoy it with people and your social skills will improve massively, and thus your magic will too. Good luck and hope you have a great Birthday (and no, you won't get 20 kisses unless you get a sex change!) |

I do not want to seem RUDE. Your post is very cRUDE, pun intended. From the time I started magic I used to perform an effect literally 100 times to get the technique right then another 100 times to build the confidence then try it out for different people "N" number of times before including it in my repertoire. To my astonishment I find you wanting to try something for your friends even before you know it, let alone perfection. On the personal front treat WOMEN with respect, it is really a pity to read what you wrote. "Practice" is what you r to do for magic "Decency" is what you need. Best Wishes, Raj.

Why, in every post asking for references to learn about lighting, not one person lists the choices available. I know about Losander, but no one even mentions his work. Is it because no one bothers to learn the correct when and where to present T work in different situation? Is this like when magicians buy magic tricks, but will not buy a table to set their props on or get a case to carry the props properly?
Really, could someone list the modern material on when and where to present this type of magic. |

Hi Mo - welcome to the Café - I think your post will continue to blossom with the personalities at the Café. Don't get discouraged if they come off, strong or smart as*ish; hey we are magis and there is a certain 'tude with a lot of us, just visit a magic convention. But, I share your enthusiasm for the art, as you sound like I felt when I was a youngster in middle/high school. Wanting the latest/greatest. I have had years of work with IT (nearly 20 years), first effect I bought was the 'Floating Bill' by John Kennedy, back when I was around 12 years of age, since then I have used the stuff in all kinds of ways. First, I would suggest to start out small, like with loops or just pieces of thread (Al baker stuff), cause something to move or stand-up, flip over, or suspend. This will help you feel more confident with using IT, because you are naturally afraid at first at getting caught. With loops and small pieces of thread (hidden from button to button) you can do quick effects, in which, your chances of getting caught and worrying about lighting will be much diminished. Only after you feel good (could be 6 months to years) then go BIG. I personally use floating effects for special situations, like paid gigs. In this case, your audience is guaranteed to be a distance away and it will be special.
You will find in your magic journey, gimmicks, tricks, and gaffs are a mean to a end, but aren't really everything. There is a series of stages that 'us' magicians go through, from the latest/greatest tricks, gimmicks, gaffs to reading books, to learning more sleight of hand, to later impromptu effects, presentations, etc, etc. You will find some of the later stages are the best to know, because you can do them anywhere and that is true MAGI - to do magic anywhere, without your props & toys I hope you won't be disappointed with the Haunted Doll, but it is something that is knacky and you might not like it. I use to use the 'rising pen' in high school. I would use it so much that I had sores.. you will see. I decide to move on to other methods, cause after all your just standing up a doll or pen. Method isn't everything and IT could do the same and save your skin As far as girls.. I would say the best thing would be to 'be yourself' but if your looking for sources of this.. I would highly suggest Sankey 'Firestarters' or even some of the PH True astonishment's might have a few pieces for ya. PM me if you are interested in these sources... as I might be your new best friend. Anycase, I hope this reply helps... magic is fun, fun art... and it's OK to run (we all did it at one time) - study, practice, read, learn, watch, live it, and enjoy! Magically Yours, Russo |
