I only purchased volume 1 because I was curious to see what the all the excitement was about. I can honestly say that this is one of the best magic DVD's I've watched in years. Hannibal's routines are well structured, the effects are strong, and his presentations are captivating. I've never heard of Hannibal until now, but I now understand why he has gotten so much praise by magicians. I enjoyed his performance and he's a very likable character.
His take on Ramsey's cylinder and coins is the best I've seen and has influenced me to add this piece to my set. Looking forward to buying volume 2...well done sir! |

I have been meaning to comment here since I learned of the release of these DVD's but had to wait to get myself a copy. Since I know Hannibal personally, being a fellow magician at the local Renaissance Festival where this past season Hannibal made his debut as a first year cast member, I wanted to get the DVD's from him in person. Tonight was the night. As soon as I got home and got settled I popped them in and started with the one routine that I was DESPERATE to learn, This Strange Engine. Let me tell you guys, if you have seen Hannibal do this live even one time, you would almost swear he was David Berglas himself. This is about as pure a card at any number routine can get. I am OBSESSED with the ACAAN plot and when I saw Hannibal do this, I was floored. It looked impossible. I had NO CLUE how it was done, and he did it three times, three different ways! The way I saw was different than what was on the DVD and involved the chosen card being spelled to based on the spectator's name. Fantastic effect and I was amazed at how quickly the method was accomplished. Upon receiving Hannibal's DVD's and watching the secret exposed, I thought to myself....That's it? It's THAT easy? What do you mean it doesn't always hit 100%? At first I was disappointed, how the HECK am I going to be able to duplicate this routine? Then I realized, this is Hannibal. He can literally screw up on stage and make it look like it was all part of the act as I have seen him do at least a few times before. No one can handle a mistake in a performance quite like he can. So then I thought, so what if it misses? Just do what Hannibal does, relax, don't act as if it went wrong, and handle it. Once you understand the secret and put fourth the necessary practice to incorporate the method, then this routine is almost self working. Sure a few outs may be needed, but you are generally within 4 cards or so of getting each phase 100% correct, and even that is rare as you will see in the video, most people just name the right number and card. He words it so cleverly that it just feels logical. The nice thing is, if you want to spell out the spectator's name and have the card appear there, do it. You can add or take away any part of the routine you like. This was my favorite trick on the DVD.
Now the DVD's themselves, I am not done watching ALL of both, but I have watched most. I bought Hannibal's lecture notes a while back and most of the effects were on there except This Strange Engine and Bookends. I already had a basic understanding of how Bookends worked and even knew how to make the boots, but the explanation with the whole thing was exactly what I needed to see that I could not get from written lecture notes, which I had not bought any way. The DVD's are well shot, no over the shoulder shots, but everything can be seen clearly enough that you understand the mechanics of what needs to be done. The best part is, these effects look highly complicated, but they are not. They are pretty simple to execute once you understand them. Hannibal explains them so nonchalantly as well that it's like, hey you idiot it is just this, and you do this with it, and that is it. Except of course he is much more classy and respectful about it. The best part is the story telling and how to weave your own character into the act, but keep in mind the character in the performance works absolutely perfectly for the act and may be hard to deviate from. Hannibal is a tremendous performer and I consider it such an honor and a privilege to know him and be associated with him in the elite magic club that he so graciously invited me to be a part of. Sleight Club is certainly going to help me grow as a magician and this DVD set is just fuel to feed my fire. If you do not have your copy yet, what are you waiting for? Sure you may be thinking, well I know how to do all that already. Don't assume so much. The magic here is not the methods which are pretty simple in themselves. What you are getting is the presentation, the pouring of one man's soul into an act that flows so organically and naturally that he could ask you if you want to stay and see two more hours worth of stuff and you will jump out of your chair and shout HELL YA! Get this! Practice it and do it, it FLOORS people! I have seen at least three or four live shows by Hannibal and every time he gets a standing ovation. Even when he's off he's on and he kills. This is stuff everyone can do, except the coin thing which requires very expensive gimmicks which I can not find for any cheaper anywhere. ( I have it in my head to make a set with poker chips myself but I am not sure my workmanship is up to the challenge.) But trust me this set is gold and I am not just saying that cause I know the guy. It is very rare to see magic this strong. So there. That's all I have to say about that. |

Coins, are you referring to Cylinder and coins? For years I have considered this.

I already watched this set 3 times. Very inspired! Well-done Hannibal! I may not do any of the routines on the DVD, but want to try to create the same feeling I felt when I watch the performances. Thank you.
