Gary Jones posted a nice idea in the Soundz Amazing thread, record rattling matches onto it and they hear the matches rattle as you shake the box.
The kicker is obviously no matches in the box just the block, great idea!

Earlier versions of this had a different method than just friction.
But I like how this one works as well. Waiting for mine in the mail, as I am curious to see quality, etc. RevJohn |

Really - I had the Spanish one and some of the cheapos too and it always used friction - so does IR for that matter.

Sadly, I received mine today, and immediately noticed that "special something" even when taking it out of the package. I don't want to expose specifics to those who don't know this method, but it did not take close examination to see the method on this right away. The method was also very easy to feel with the fingers. I emailed Penguin and they graciously offered to either replace it with another one, or just refund the purchase altogether. Trying now to decide if I want to take a chance on a 2nd one. The weight of the block is nice and heavy. It's 7/32 thick and size-wise, it's 1 1/8 X 1 3/4. This was $35 delivered, which isn't totally expensive, but I don't expect the method to be that visible on a trick at this price point.
For those that are interested in a picture of this, shoot me an email, and I'll show you what I mean. |

I could "feel" the area where the gimmick meets, and I wasn't pleased as I had specifically asked in my note when purchased for a good gimmick... and that I would be picky. True to Acar's word, I called Penguin customer # last week and they said no prob - they would "hand pick" a good gimmick and send me a new one ASAP. The new one was FAR better - and I could see that it had been tested a bit as there were two holes in my matchbox already. Look, I sincerely appreciated the superb as always customer servive from Penguin and staff. I am very happy now with my new MM, and it really was made well and I know like Corbett and other do ... what to look for and what is a no no. That being said I would respectfully say that Acar and staff should be looking at each MM carefully before sending them out. Yes, the good ones are good. But there are obviously some getting through that are may not be quite up to par. The machining on this needs to be done such as both ha***s should meet and be more or less smooth on both sides to the finger - and there should noty be a line visible. If the machining is made so that the two ha***s are not equal, then you catch an edge. That is what I saw on my fisrt one. Look for the price this is a no brainer, and the fact that I have in my hands a replacement that was made well shows that MM from Penguin has evolved - but there may be some getting through that are not as good as others. I didn't want to get into this as I am very happy with my new MM, and extremely appreciative of Acar's assuarance of quality. But if both Corbett and I experienced something that sounds identical, then there should be a little higher quality control imo. Over and out

And again, I would post my pictures here, but since this is not a Secret Sessions thread, it would not be appropriate. Nonetheless, mine is going back.

That may be the case but some are just slipping thru the cracks. Sometimes when gimmicks like these are mass produced they may make a bunch of sets and then when they go to make a new batch days or weeks later, the machines are reset, but in fact may be .001" off. Often this does not matter as long as the entire gimmick is from the same set-up. But when you get one part from the first set-up and the second from another set-up they may not be interchangeable without making the gimmick unacceptable. Even .001" can be detected pretty easily if in many situations. It sounds like maybe the individual parts of the gimmick are somehow being intermingled, perhaps thinking that they are absolutely identical, when in fact they are not. Again, I have no idea what is going on in this case but that is often the scenario from my experience. |

I love Oenguin Acar and I have no doubt he will take a closer look.
The tolerances on these and accuracy must be very tight.

I've ordered a lot from PM over the years, but if this product is new and already having quality control issues, my advice to others is Buyer Beware.

Acar staked his name and rep on this thread - so I'm not too concerned about it Corbett.
The new one I received (and I am picky like you are) is visually excellent and I do not exaggerate. It came in the mail about 3 days after my call, and PM stood by it and sent the new one instantly. I give Penguin the benefit of the doubt, and I suspect that Acar (who reads these threads often) will be paying VERY close attention now. Penguin has earned my repsect and trust over too many years and too much $$$ to give me a shred of hesitancy in buying this or anything from them. No one is perfect, and these are obviously a hand made item. Many MM buyers above have already stated how thrilled they are with their gimmicks already, and I am 100% sure you will get a new one asap which will make you happy. If Penguin and Acar are personally guaranteeing you and everyone wil lbe THRILLED and happpy with your MM, then the risk is their not ours.

I've had mine for about a week and despite try to "work it in" was still having difficulty opening it ( and closing it without it talking too much.) Solved the problem by applying an ever -so thin coating of mineral oil to the pins. Mineral oil is inert & provided just enough lubrication to make it work well w/o making it too easy to discover when examined.
PS - Does anyone else find the Murphy's pop-up annoying, especially when accessing the Café from a phone? |

Glad you mentioned the Murphy's pop-up. I thought I was the only one who found it annoying.

Yeah, the Murphy's logo gets no love from me. It always gets in the way when browsing on my Kindle. I hope Murphy's realizes this, as it kind of annoys me and doesn't make me feel the positive towards them.

I hate the Murphy's pop up. It needs to size down smaller when viewing on a device as it annoyingly takes up too much screen real estate.
