My latest and greatest...

Hiya Gang!

As many of you know, I recently had some pretty serious wrist surgery. No worries, though, I'll be back at 100% in a couple of months. But in this time, I thought I would take the opportunity to sort out and finish a couple of projects I've been working on. One of them was a new "carry bag"...

I've got tons of bags, boxes, cases, and every other storage device you can think of but I wanted one bag, one single case that I could take with me to a coffee shop, or a friend's place, camping, or wherever. And that would have:

a) Projects and effects that I'm currently working on.

B) Would allow me to do either a Close-Up gig or a Stage Show at a moment's notice.

It wouldn't be my "official" close-up case (I already have two. One for gigs [that stays at home until needed] and one for the car [in case I ever go to a gig and somehow forget my case]). It also wouldn't be my "official" stand-up show rig. I wanted it to be something that I would carry with me day-to-day.

And I finally got it today! I was with my wife at a Craft Fair a couple of months ago and I came across this booth called "Trace Of Grey Designs" that had the coolest leather work I've ever seen. Not only that, but the two artists that run it (Claudia and Monique) were just awesome people. We really clicked. So, after some discussions on what I was looking for, I commissioned them to create this masterpiece. Needless to say, I absolutely love it.

Image

I love the almost "military" feel of it. I wanted it to look old and timeless. Stamped on it is "Property of Jamie D. Grant" which is a throwback to when people used to personalize all of their belongings. I also hadn't thought of attaching the rings to it but after I got it today, I saw that it was an easy thing to add. Perfect!

Image

It stands better on the other end and it fits perfectly in my hand.

Image

Instead of buckles, which can break, they used this leather peg and hole system. Easier to open and close. Faster, as well.

Image

I love the way it rolls out. "Send Wonder" stamped on the inside!

Image

Fully unrolled. You can see the one major pocket on the left with two other pockets in the middle. On top of that middle pocket is my "3 Card Monte" which I pretty much practice daily.

Image

A view from the top. I'll put a list of everything that's in it below.

Image

With some of the top stuff removed. There's actually three decks there (two of which are in Vaults. The top is an Industrial Revelation in a black Vault. The middle is an Invisible Deck. And the bottom is a regular deck in a custom covered Vault. Micro Chop cup is on the left and TT is on the right.

Here's the full list of what's inside. I listed it as a menu and include it inside, as well.

There you have it! It wasn't cheap at around $250, but it's worth every penny. It does exactly what I wanted it to do, is the perfect design for me, and I'll keep it for the next 60 years. I hope you guys like it, as well!

I had a friend, John Corey (rip) who was one of the best in the country. He and Diane were well known for their specialty in leather work. He made me a chop cup that is out of this world. It doesn't use m*****s at all. The principle is new for the purpose of magic. You can use balls, dice, keys, and even coins. Really whatever you can imagine. John Riggs wrote up the routine for me which was many years ago. Also Jamie, I can relate to the wrist injury as I hurt mine after thanksgiving. Should be back in the saddle in about 4 weeks.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

How do you carry this? I presume in a messenger bag or backpack or something? It looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

Something to carry things going into another thing to carry things?

Looks like it goes on a belt to me.

Too large for a belt and wayyyyyyy too expensive for anything like that if you ask me. I'd buy two IR's instead.

Alex- you should get one!

Steven Conner- we can be one-handed together, lol. And that Chop cup sounds awesome!

J-Mac - I'll take some measurements for you when I can find a ruler, lol.

IAIN: Those look awesome!!!

CdnAndrew: Just in my hand- Or, exactly, just in a backpack or wherever.

brad12d3: That makes my day, lol.

paisa23: As does this!

Jack Straw: Lol, thanks for the IR support! I look at it like a good set of Cups and Balls. It'll become part of my work. Definitely not on a belt or anything, you're right, but it's perfect for carrying. It's just that I go out a lot and am always filling pockets. Either a convention, or a fellow magician will come into town and we'll hang out, or I'll go for coffee with some friends, etc. It's ideal for what I need. And, compared to what I charge, this is an absolute steal, lol!

Makes sense to me. Kind of like putting a deck of cards into it's box and then putting the box into your pocket. It may not be absolutely necessary to have the cards in a box, but it's nice to keep things all together and neat and clean.

Something like Jamie's leather pouch may be more than you are willing or able to spend on it, but that is quite different from it being too expensive.
Try making one exactly like it and then see what you would be willing to sell it for. Probably make $250.00 seem cheap. A custom anything almost always costs, but as someone who has made custom items in the past, I guarantee you those leather folks are not getting rich off it.

Custom leather work costs money. If you want an off the rack item, you can get it cheaper. Jamie conceived this bag in a dream, told the makers his wishes and they made it into reality. Isn't that "real magick"? From nothing, something.
Incredible bag Jamie, thanks for sharing.

Are those girls really young? They look to be 12.

Jack Straw, this compares well with the pouch prices over at The Ambitious Card. Not out of line at all.

J-Mac, I believe you, but it just seems way too much to me. The last (nice) leather jacket I bought (several years ago) cost about the same money.

I have a number of cheaper pouches that I sometimes use, and they function well.

I bought a leather one on eBay for about $25 shipped approximately 5 years ago. Did it have all the flaps and stuff that this one has? No. It just zips open and closed.

Me, personally, I don't want to unroll a sleeping bag every time I need to get stuff out. But that's just me. I certainly realize that everyone has different tastes and needs.

I have 2 Sankey Assassin's Pouches. Wearing one on each side of my belt usually gives me enough room. But I only use them when I'm not wearing a jacket.

Every jacket that I own has enough inside pockets to carry as much as I need. I added a few inside pockets to my two Winter jackets, and my Spring/Fall jackets came with enough already. It's tough being a magician!

I like Jamie and I respect his opinion. We are all different. I don't mean to start trouble here. It's just my opinion.

And as John C asked me here twice in the last week when I offered my opinion on something, "Yes, but who R U"? (I hate using the letters R U instead of spelling out "are you", but that's the way John C wrote it. I'm an older guy.)

I'm just a ordinary average guy who likes magic. Your mileage may vary. And I realize that. It's just my opinion, and we all can have one.

I have a Gazzo pouch that originally cost $600! I paid $400 and think it is worth the $600. I guess it depends on whether you need it and will use it. I have done cups and balls all over the place using that bag an even had baby ducks as the final load.

Somehow I wonder that spongeballs and ropes occur in Master Jamies permanent set.

Anyway, personally made bags, gimmicks, vests, holdouts and such items can be VERY valuable things for oneself. I really can understand Jamies enthusiasm.
