Thanks to the recommendations for "We Were Soldiers," I picked up the book for my Kindle, and I've been enjoying it.

So, if you had been on the team, you would have done the same things and been embroiled in the same scandal. It's a good thing you're a magician now! Well, when troops perform poorly or the job doesn't get done, it's a direct reflection on the commander. The buck stops with him, or it's supposed to work that way (in reality sometimes officers will pin the blame for their failures onto their subordinates and the subordinates pay the consequences for the failures of their commander or take the fall for their commanders/officers).

When that general went on some kind of delegation to go visit the Russians, he should not smile at the Russians and when he shakes hands with the Russians he should give a very firm and hard handshake. Don't smile at the enemy. Don't show weakness. You want the enemy to know that if they push the red button on us that their is no doubt in their mind they are dealing with somebody who will push the red button right back on them and wipe their country off the map. Don't be nice to the enemy's women. They are not your friends and they are their to milk you for intelligence. Look like a mean ass and above all don't get drunk and clown around trying to be some kind of band super star as if the Russians were your buddy. Because they are not. They are the enemy and they need to know that we are not a joke or to be messed with. I am sure the Russians probably weren't impressed with our nuclear forces after that General acted unprofessionally and try to be all buddy buddy with them.

The film on its own wasn't bad, but I had a horrible experemce. I sat next to a boy, not older than 7 (his father was next to him). The film started at 730, and the boy clearly had no idea what was going on and was not liking the loud noises. Not a movie for a child that age. Then near the end there is a small scene where an apache mows dow 15-20 people, and someone in the crowd yelled "YEAHHHH!!!" I don't get it.

Last I checked, the cold war is still over. Tell that to Putin. He doesn't seem to think it's over and he's not our friend. An officer or general in the ICBM forces is not a good will ambassador. He's a service member and his job is to let the enemy know there will be serious consequences and a very high price to pay for an attack on the United States. Somebody needed to tell that general that he's not a good will ambassador to Russia.

I'd bet you a dollar that the Russians (and everyone else) already knows there would be serious consequences for launching a nuclear attack on the United States. Staring them down and crush-grip handshakes are actually pretty laughable.
Like I said, the cold war is over and Russia is no longer considered an "enemy." (They're not exactly allies, either, but that's another discussion.) And, of course, if you treat everyone as an enemy, you can be sure they'll be one eventually. |

I drink a pint or two on a regular basis at a watering hole frequented by Seals on Coronado Island in San Diego. The proprietor is a retired Seal Commander.
The only training ground for Seals is on Coronado Island. Tonight I related a few of these postings to my mates. Silent Warriors tell no lies, for we never expose the game. He has little honor, was the consensus. P.s. I'm the unofficial, official magician of The Seals on Coronado Island |

This film, 53rd on the top 100 films of all time by the American Film Institute, won an oscar for best picture, best director, and best supporting actor for Christopher Walken. Robert Deniro and the great Meryl Streep starred also. Excellent. If you haven't seen it, check it out. |

I saw the Deer Hunter and didn't like it because, to me, it wasn't real. I missed the message other than, you come home with bad PTSD.

I think part of the message was that everyone's war experience is different and that there are paths one can travel that they could never have foreseen. Different horrors of war than engaging and killing the enemy or seeing friends killed in action.
There are countless other horrific paths a confused mind can take while deployed in different locations in unusual situations. |

I don't really consider it a "war movie" in the same way as, for instance, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, etc. To me, those movies are "about" the war and The Deer Hunter is "about" the people with the war almost acting as an antagonist. The Deer Hunter is one of those movies that if I'm flipping channels and it's on, I'll watch the rest of it. Doesn't matter what time it is, almost doesn't matter what else I have going on. I've stayed up until 3:00 a.m. on a work day because I noticed The Deer Hunter was on right before I went to sleep.

Staring them down and crush-grip handshakes are actually pretty laughable. Depends on who's doing it. I knew a couple of guys in my unit who could stare right through somebody and intimidate the hell out of most people. The thing is, when you are a service member, your job is not to be a nice guy (except to your fellow soldiers and team mates because those are the guys watching your back). You're not a good will ambassador. Your job is to show the enemies of the United States you are a serious professional about protecting the US and you are willing to die in the process doing it (not that anybody is a death lover or wants to die, but that's part of your job). It's just the way of the warrior. And airmen, whether they realize it or not, are warriors too. They are not just merely desk jockeys. Their job is to protect the country too. Military service members are not good will ambassadors and the Russians are the enemy currently as far as I am concerned. People say the Cold War is over, but Putin doesn't seem to think so and he has demonstrated he is not a friend of the US. After watching this general clown around in Russia and then after hearing about the drug and cheating scandal in our missile forces, the Russians might think they could get away with nuking the US because we seem unprepared, soft and not having our act together. Plus they could start thinking our military service members are easy targets for espionage after seeing a drunk general trying to flirt around with the enemy's ladies (and believe me, the enemy will use attractive women to get intel out of service members, including generals, it's a classic trick). That's the impression some of our adversaries could come away with after all this.
