I've been doing some shows at libraries, and nursing homes and the like, for the pure art of magic. People are now hiring me for gigs, and I want a nice giveaway. I was thinking shirts with my name, and website address given to volunteers who help me onstage would be nice. Any sources? Input?

The TV show I work on (volunteer, community) gives away tee-shirts to winners of our phone-in draws (and sells them to others). They cost us around A$8 each if we do them by the hundred ($4 by the 1000), and we sell them for $20 to cover the cost of the give-aways.
There are plenty of places that will do them for you, just make sure they don't sting you too much for the cost of doing the screens. The screens are reused next time so you only pay once. Check the yellow pages. One hint, spend a bit more and get a higher quality tee shirt than the base model, it doesn't cost much extra, but it means people are more likely to actually wear it and give you the free advertising. T-shirts are a nice giveaway, but if you give one to every volunteer the expense will be prohibitive, especially for library shows.
You might give one to a special volunteer - for example, the person who volunteered to be sawed in half, or as a gift to the librarian who booked the show. Everone else would get something less expensive, a magic trick or magic booklet, for example. |

T-shirts are very nice as a give-away and also act as a walking advertisement for you and your services. A nice shirt could have the word magic assistant on the front over the pocket area and your logo or brand mark on the back of the shirt. Under the logo can be your website URL. Keep it simple as your shirt is always moving and it needs to register quickly.
A couple things to remember about designs and printing of shirts: - Every additional color placed on a shirt cost you more money as it becomes a new screen that has to be prepared - Stick with doing shirts that are flat color and not photographic. Photographic can be done but the colors are never all that great and the initial cost is high - A nice two color shirt can work rather nicely and keeps your cost reasonable - If you need to do limited runs on your shirts and do not meet the volume requirements of your silk screen place, try having a few shirts done at Kinkos. It is a different process but is effective if you only need a few of them for a given event - The smaller the area of color being placed on the shirt, the harder it is to register that color and get it to print right. This is why logos and flat art work best on shirt designs - You will want to go to a silk screen shop to get your shirts done professionally. Keep in mind that silk screening is a lot chaper route then having embroidery done. Save the embroidery for a jacket. - You can also get shirts done through specialty printers that specialize in printing and producing your logo onto various objects like shirts or mugs or keychains etc. Think outside of the box and think what items you can have your logo on that people will use time and again. These are just a few of the many ideas and tips to consider and think about when having shirts made up for your many events. A great idea is to give the shirt to the person who books you for the event. You can get them on stage and say you have a special magic trick for them. You then have the entire audience say a big thank you and you prtesent them with the gift. This makes for a great photo opportunity and can get a great picture for your promotional needs. Also, wearing your shirt is a great idea if your doing a fair gig or event and will be in street clothes before and after the gig. This way people can easily spot you and know you are the entertainer. It helps brand you and get your name out in a fun way. I hope this is of help to many. If anyone would like further information in regards to shirts or specialty products, please feel free to e-mail me at magic4u02@aol.com. I would be happy to help you out and point you in the right direction. Kyle

We have several friends that are in the business of t-shirt designs. They have booths as music festivals around the country and have thier products in almost 7,000 stores nationwide. These days transfers are the way to go in stead of screenprinting. If you have the time to do the transfers yourself, you will save tons of money and will not end up with odd sizes you cant get rid of. The transfer machines are very cheap. When you have a design printed for you, go with large sheets and fit as many images on there as possible...sideways, upside down, small logos filling up any gaps. Now your cost is incredibly cheap. We can get our shirts done for less than $2.50...and that's for a black shirt, which costs more than white. They are also not lightweight shirts.
I mostly bring this up to hopefully educate people that the old ways of doing things are not always the best. Technology and high volume had relly brought prices down. Nowadays, you can get 4 color offset press for just pennies more than B&W. Why would anyone ever use B&W again? If anyone needs any more info t-shirts or printing....just email me. kevin@livingillusions.com

Shirts are good but like Jim said can be expensive. What I do is I have a person that helps in a bigger routine, I give them one for their help and then I do a commercial to sell them after the show if - I indeed do sales at the end of my show.

That is a great lead in to your BOR sales at the event you are doing. Transfers are not bad at all and can give you some good results. Just that a transfer can also krinkle and wear out a bit faster then traditional silk screen. Transfers these days have gotten better in quality so it certainly is an option worth looking into.

Something else that may be worth looking into is CaféPress. You need spend no money to have the t-shirts made, but you're limited to selling them online. At the same time, you can purchase a few of the shirts yourself and use them as giveaways, and as advertisement for both you and your CaféPress site.
Yeah, I know. It'd be nice if you didn't have to purchase your own product, huh? It's not a perfect solution, but it may work for you if you play with it some. Go to http://www.cafepress.com if you're interested. You're not limited to t-shirts there, either, by the way. They have a fairly wide range of personalizeable products; even booklets and CDs with your content. |

If your looking for give aways there is so much that can be done by yourself with little to no cost for you as well but work great at getting your name out. Why spend a lot of money up front of you really do not have to to get the same results.
A good coloring flyer for kids works well because they will hold onto it. Book marks can be made up easily for library shows. Business card magnets can be made cheap and people will use them, keeping your name fresh in their minds. So many ideas if you open up your mind to them. Kyle

What is the standard size mix (% of S, % of M % of L) that you should order when placing your initial order of shirts? The last thing you want is a bunch of t-shirts that no one wants.

Someone on the Café suggested printing shirts with "Now You See Me" on the front and "Now You Don't" on the back.
I like it! |
