As many know I have more then fifty copies the Australian Torture Crib booklet, originally published by Lee Jacobs. I am looking at the booklet now. Both versions are in the booklet.
The original version has screw eyes, the improved version has holes through the board. The original version keeps the chain on the front of the board whereas the improved version has the chain running through the board, from front to back 9 times. Here are the questions: The audience can't see the chain running through both sides (Improved version) unless you are rotated, surrounded or have mirrors. yes? The improved version does not have the chain run across your eyes & neck but only the neck - But two more holes can be added so the chain can, yes? The improved version seems to be more difficult for the spectators to run the chain, as opposed to the original version, yes? Either version appears to be suited for Ren Fairs, School Shows, or festivals, yes? Is the improved version really improved?

In my opinion--no. I had Abbott's Ghost Walks as a teen, and the chaining process required a trained assistant to guide the volunteers without them getting confused (even though the holes were numbered).

I was thinking about drawing lines from hole to hole (on the back) so they can follow the path. Then changing the numbers to letters : A ------- A, B----------B and so on. There are really only 4 Ins and Outs on each side, so the letter to letter should simplify everything.
I'll make a table top model and see if lay people can follow it. Thanks.

Hi Jay, you probably already know this but, I think John Novak wrote a whole book on this one escape. I have perform an escape based on the information he provided using a board with about 16 one inch screw eyelets. Start will the chain running thru two eye-lets at the bottom and have them work there way up the board, crossing the chains ( switch the left chain with the right chain end) as they feed the chain thru the next pair of eye-lets. I have never had any problems with anyone getting confused, tell them to "Lace you up, like they lace there shoes". Best Regards, Paul.

It has an introduction from Novak only but was written by Les Jacobs and... I am the current owner of the copyright. (From Jacobs to the Cannons to me)
The original question was about whether the improved model is really an improvement. At one convention, Danny Hunt had a professionally built model which was the original version and it played well. I've also examined the improved model (Ghost Walks), and as Steve believes the way it's laved-out is awkward. My idea is to use clear acrylic because I plan to be surrounded and want people behind me to feel included. I also want to change-out the chain for thick rope so the acrylic doesn't get thrashed. I'm sure it doesn't make a difference weather rope or chain is used, as far as the audience is concerned. I think the improved version WILL work when the ins & outs have a guide, in the form of a stripe (as outlined above). By the way, has anyone ever seen an Acme Screw that's 13 feet long and 7 inches in diameter? I had no idea my CNC could program such a thing, but it can. Needless to say, This is going to be a Rube Goldberg.

Hey Jay, How's the clear acrylic Crib going? Love the idea!
I think if you start the rope going through the eyelets at the bottom of the board, your ankles "tied" with loops of the rope. Then just instructing the two audience members to "Lace you up like a shoe (or boot), I'm sure they would get the idea. I've done this with Kovaks' version and had no problem. Best of luck and please post some pics when you get it built. |

I have it worked-ou., I can CNC faint paths on the material which act as guides like dotted lines on a treasure map. I made a hand held sample and the people it was tested on didn't have a problem.
Thanks for asking. next updat will probably be in the summer.

About 20 years ago, Dick Xavier auditioned for School Assembly Service (Chicago). I missed the auditions that year, because I was on the road. But, the other bookers and Betty Carlson (manager) said he did a good job. SAS offered him a contract and he did a tour.
I was told he did a strait jacket, a 100 foot rope, and the AUSTRALIAN CRIB. (45 minutes). The schools liked him. When he had an elementary school, he had to do some stock magic to hold interest. He didn't like that. A year or so later,(1994) I was booking for National School Assemblies (Jack West had bought out SAS) Jack Lythgoe booked about 13 weeks for Xavier in Idaho and Utah. I had him booked for 6 weeks in Tennessee and Kentucky. It was a spring l995) tour. In mid December, he called and canceled his tour. I got Jim Jayes to sub for Xavier in Idaho/Utah and I subbed in Tennessee and Kentucky. I did a demonstration type escape program (with some magic to fill). I used Hamburg 8s (gaffed)modern type thumb cuffs, and the oval loop/chains, plus a strait jacket. (I hsd had an Abbott Ghost Walks, but had sold it) Has anyone heard of Xavier since???
