Careful saying you don't need any skill.....
While technically a little goes a long way, being able to present this as an interesting and entertaining routine is a different story. Having a strong performing back round in card magic is extremely useful here. |

This is brilliant!
Jsereb, as far as I know, Thetalia is a city in Bangladesh. Maybe this place has some special significance to Ian. AllanK |

He's been performing this for 25 years. You couldn't convince me it's not difficult.

I would like to see a quick version for strolling work. Anyone?

This is great. It can be done with minimal skill or with great skill; it's a concept, really, that you can fit to your own skillset. However, like 'The Trick that Cannot Be Explained', the more you know and can do, the easier and more inexplicable it can be.
My personal preference is to aim to produce an Ace-high straight from a shuffled deck and only one of each card; this you can do suprisingly quickly and consistently. I've not purchased this particular download; I bought Ian's Penguin Lecture and learnt the idea there. Really excellent idea and one of those routines that's really invigorating and refreshing to perform.

Got this yesterday. REALLY wasn't sure about it. Liked the method, thought it would be the same "time frame" as mind ball by David Regal.
performed it 3 times today....... OMG, THIS IS SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!! |

The really nice thing about this is that, though it depends on thinking on your feet with a spectator, it can be practiced alone, unlike, as Ian points out, cold reading. IIt's also really fun to perform. $5.00 extremely well spent.

The best part of this is that it is so much fun to practice. Move over Solitaire and Soduku!

I loved Ians penguin lecture and if you want to dig deeper into the routine this is a highly recommended purchase. The two demonstrations at the beginning are great!

Just watched this and I agree that this will be a lot of fun to practice. Ideal for when I'm in work and 'on hold' on the phone.

I just finished this. Without revealing too much, can it be done with the deck in the left hand?

Budja, if you had really just finished it, you would know that Ian is left handed and he teaches it for left handed people (initially)

So the method was inspired by The Trick That Cannot Be Explained? (one of my favorites) More jazzy than anything

Sashac, Maybe you misunderstood me. Because he is left handed, his dealing position is in the right hand. My dealing position is in the left hand so the deck is in the left hand. I don't think he mentions anything about being right handed. I tried to PM but he doesn't accept any PMs anymore.

They mention the corrections at the end of the video (like 5 minutes left or so)

Of course you can do it in your left hand.
Sorry but that's a bit like asking : can you do a do**le l**t with your left hand?

Hi all,
I'm glad one or two of you enjoy 'Thetalia'. Like anything else in magic, some people will like it more than others, and some people will get more value from it than others. But for those who do learn it well, and use it, I think you'll have great fun with it and also entertain many, many people with it. It's true I don't accept PMs here on the Café, but anyone can ask me anything, either here on this thread or by email: ianx@ianrowlandx.com but without the two x letters. It's true that there are videos of me performing 'Thetalia' on YouTube and Vimeo. Please don't attach too much significance to these 'demonstrations', as I think they all took place at magic conventions, usually late at night and after a little alcohol! I agree that a running time of 11-12 minutes is excessive, but it probably seemed a good idea at the time when I was among magic friends, we were having fun, and I was being encouraged to keep going as long as possible! Smiles and magic... - Ian

After running through it several times on my own, I've now performed this for two different people, each of whom was knocked out by it. It creates the illusion of a level of card handling mastery that I could never acquire in this lifetime. What a treat.

Incidentally, I'd LOVE to see anyone else's performances of this routine! Either on video or in person at Blackpool. Over the years, I've found that it's good fun to share different styles of presentation. It's a very versatile routine in that sense -- anyone can shape and mould it to their own style and approach.
