Playing devil's advocate.
In this world of Homer's, Kainoa's and Ponta's, do we still need to turn to this book for inspiration/ideas? Why? |

Yes. Basics are the foundation for all advanced sleights. Tough to walk before you learn to crawl!

And not only that, but there's lots of good magic in Bobo's. A lot of Gary Kurtz' work has been inspired by the Bobo book. Doesn't appear to be too exciting in the world of downloads and dvd's, but there's lots of good stuff in there.

I'd say all the guys you mentioned started off with Bobo's in one way or another as to the basics. Not one of their coin effects can be done without the basics taught in Bobo's, which came out long before they ever started doing magic at all. I'm sure they have looked into the book themselves more than once, or perhaps looked into someone else's work who had looked into Bobo's on their journey. I know all the effects on Ponta's "SICK" DVD are works from others that he gives credit too. Most of them first gave credit to this famous book as an initial instruction and or inspiration.
In most cases, no matter what you build, you typically start at the bottom, that be where the basics or foundation hand you your first tools and opportunity. Bobo's is and will likely always be one of the great lights in coin magic, as to yesterday and still today, if you're smart enough to check there. A hammer is still used for the same thing, no matter who uses it or when...so is the nail.

Maybe I should clarify my question. What reasons are there to return to Modern Coin Magic for inspiration after years of study and having already worked through it in the beginning.
Here's why Im asking: I am considering picking up the hardcover edition (my original, worn to bits softcover was recently lost during a move). Should I invest the $50? I like the idea of always having this book nearby but Im wondering if it's simply nostalgia for my developmental years or will I benefit, 20 years later, from its contents? I already understand its value for a beginner |

The hardcover has more material in it than the Dover paperback. Since you probably want to keep Modern Coin Magic in your library (or, get it BACK in you library), might as well replace it with the NEW Modern Coin Magic.

Well, I have had the soft cover and hardcover for decades now. I still look through the books even though I can do all sorts of stuff in coin magic, even some stuff that ain't in the book but the book led me to being able to do it. Perhaps it's for the same same reason I still respond to my mom, "Yes, M'am" after all these years. I don't have too, she can't spank me any more or even chase me behind my mischief. She raised me to be a man, and I am certainly that, but I still go back to her at times for thoughts, advice and reassurances. she still warms my heart and makes me feel that I can do anything I put my mind to behind some good listening & learning. Perhaps it's the same sorta things with that old book.
Also, in your 20 years you speak of, there will perhaps be someone that looks to you for advice and instruction on the subject. You will not remember everything but that old book will. And you can point to it and know that it will not steer anyone wrong with it's tried & true lessons. I'd say it's worthy to be upgraded to hardcover, plus there's some stuff in there that ain't in the soft cover that might be of interest. I'm just sayin'. -Mb

Yeahhh.. I own the paperback. Now that I know the hardcover has more content, I'm curious as to what content. (to decide on rather to upgrade to a hardcover or not)
Can someone please PM me a brief description of the hard covers contents appose to the soft cover? I'd really appreciate it. |

You can still learn an awful lot from the paperback as well. It's only about $10 bucks maybe, so you didn't waste your money, and besides, you can always pick up the hard cover version going forward. I think it's really worth the eventual purchase as your appreciation for the book grows, as well as your greater understanding and abilities from the treasure trove of coin magic it offers, and continues to give for the journey and a lifetime.
Your paperback version is just the beginning but you are well armed to start class with it for many grades to come. Oh, and welcome to the Café JD. -Mb

J.B. and I met in 1951. We were friends until he died. He put his "heart and soul" into that book! He spent years gathering from the best known sources, their best 'stuff'. I even have a "bit" in the second edition! --and, I don't consider myself a "coinician"! In my younger days, I did master the Coin Roll with four coins, and the Five Coin Star with both hands, but, like Jay used to say: "That money has all been spent!"
I still refer to it, and use material from it (My favorite: EXPANSION OF TEXTURE! which he showed me in 1951!). (Using a Jack Chanin bit and a move from Jon Racherbaumer,I put together a nice 5 minutes, but J.B. was the initial influence!) In 1964 (NYC IBM/SAM convention)many attendees walked out on Bobo's act! (He did material from his school show--it wasn't "cool" enough!) They didn't know that he had a beautiful home in Texarkana (paid for!) and he bought a new car every year. He only used motels a couple times a year. He worked as much as he wanted to, and slept in his own bed almost every night. He was an EXCELLENT sleight of hand man--his dice work was phenomenal! --and he knew how to palm a coin, too! A carpenter does not start building a house from the roof, and work down! He starts from the foundation and works up! Mv217 speaks from experience, too! PS:::JAY MARSHALL KICKED HIMSELF IN THE "YOU KNOW WHERE" FOR NOT WATCHING THE COPYRIGHTS BETTER! The "paperback compamy" has a team of people checking on expired copyrights! I treasure by blue hardcover edition of Bobo. It was the book that got me started in coin magic. I made my parents buy it for me as a birthday present when I was 15. Years later I found a first edition, which I have had signed by my coin magic friends. Expansion of texture is a trick I do to this day, followed by copper or silver extraction and finally a transposition in the hands. There may be fancier ways to do stuff, but the building blocks are right in those pages, as well as a plethora of ideas to stimulate the creative juices. Remember that we all stand on the shoulders of those who stood before us.

I love the idea of entertaining and astounding people with older techniques. There's a pleasure in this, although I cannot quite articulate why. Maybe it has something to do with my general interest in history or the idea of keeping alive the hard work of those who came before us. It's interesting to observe how a trick created 100 years ago can completely captivate a modern audience. There's something satisfying in this.

I feel that Bobo is essential to me. I find it clear and thorough. Roth's material, to me, is best in combination with (or in addition to) Bobo.
