Whist reading a book by George Schindler
He writes about the basic effects of magic. That along with Penn and Tellers "7 Principles of Magic " have me inquiring about The basic effects of mentalism My personal study suggests, Precognition, Telepathy, Psychokinesis, Clairvoyance Mind Control and Super Memory as some of the basic effects That mentalism employs What others are there (if any) and how do they create the illusion of mental magic?

Also please note I'm not asking for methods or how a mental feat is accomplished merely whether or not if my list is complete and accurate

Telekinesis is notably missing from your list, however I personally think that PK effects lack credibility, and generally come off as more "magickey".

PK is the more inclusive term, since it includes causing action at a distance as well as in the hands (as in key bending, etc.)

Thanks Mr. Cassidy
So in your expert opinion do you believe I am accurate in the list I have compiled or do you feel it lacks additional categories or requires further discussion?

One might also add hypnosis to the list since it seems to go hand in hand with mentalists today.

Who wants to argue over whether "readings" are technically an effect?
(I don't think they are, according to the OP's request: "What others are there (if any) and how do they create the illusion of mental magic?") I'd possibly remove "Mind Control" from the list and replace it with "Influence" - that removes the likely overlaps with telepathic mind control or psychokinetic mind control. But semantics...

I recall that IAIN (I believe?) compiled a rather extensive list. I'll try to locate it or someone else may remember the list and re-post it

Dariel Fitzkee's The Trick Brain lays out an interesting list. Those most apt to the mentalist would be:
- Animation (PK) - Control (which he acknowledges to somewhat overlap animation) - Indentification (clairvoyance) - Thought reading (telepathy) - Thought transference (also telepathy, but interesting to view the two skills as distinct) - Predictions (precognition) - ESP (largely clairvoyance) - Pseudo-skill (such as day-for-date, super memory, etc) So, according to one of the classics, your list is pretty complete!
