I enjoy doing close up magic, but almost all of my professional experience is in doing parlor/stage shows. Is there a demand for close up magic shows out there? I would love to get the opportunity to perform close up magic for small groups.

I just don't understand the question. I do a close up show 3 times a week. Not sure what the question about what type of audience is interested means.

What types of audiences do you do your close up shows for? Small birthday parties? Trade shows?

I read tarot cards at a local coffee house.
I don't table hop, I have a little card on the table that say's Tarot Readings. I do a 3 card reading which is free. Then if they are interested, I tell them I can do an hour reading for $85, which is away from the coffee shop.An hour reading uses 15 cards. Rick

Hello Caféinst
Usually corporate events tend to want a strolling magician with strong close up magic skills. They want the magician to walk around and interact with their guests from table to table - group to group. Also, for holiday parties and special nights country clubs/private clubs usually want a close up magician as well! If it is your thing, restaurants also usually have close up magicians and its a good place to build your skills and learn what works and what doesn't. Usually, if you want to do a "close up" magic show. You have one person at each end of the table and they usually participate throughout the show. Now you can kinda create theater style seating if possible for others to watch. Now if you are playing for smaller groups have them kinda huddle around the table. For corporate events you can approach this a bit different. You can have random groups approach your table and do 5 -10 min demos! I hope this helps. Cheers Curtis

Curtis,
Yes, that helps Curtis. I don't like doing walk around. I would rather people come to me. That way I know for certain that they are interested. That's why I am interested in whether there is a demand for close-up shows. Danny Doyle, If you are doing close up magic in front of a camera while people watch on a video screen, it's no longer closeup; it's stage magic. |

Then you need to sell your show that way! Find a market for it!

About 50% of my gigs every year consist of close-up engagements. Of these, half are strolling gigs and the other half are formal close-up shows. The show I market is a 45-minute show. A true close-up show usually consists of 30 people or less. After that, you're really doing a stand-up show. I do both private and corporate engagements. My calendar is full, so there is definitely a market for it.
As Curtis said, find a market for it. Good luck! Lou Serrano |

Guys you can get caught up in labels and all the bs you like.
With the seating we use not a single chair is more than 20 feet from the table surface. The camera enhances but is not necessary for the vast majority. Call it what you like. I don't particularly care. It is close up magic done for up to 300 people sitting within 20 feet of the surface performed upon. Call it stage or parlor or close up or small venue or coffee house or smidgen. I don't care what it is called it is easier to get paid higher regularly for 300 people as opposed to 30. But yes lets argue about what we call the show. That sounds like a much more productive use of bandwith.

Danny,
Warren Gibson who owns and performs at Warren and Annabelle's Magic Night Club in Maui has a theater that seats about 70 people. He does an amazing job and features all close-up magic. His theater is perfectly set up to showcase his style of magic, so I know it can be done. If you're doing a close up show for 300 people, congratulations! I'd love to see the set-up sometime.
