Been playing "The Last Rock," a pretty cool iPad curling app. It has various practice challenges, an option to play against the computer on easy or hard mode, and a head to head option against random distant opponents, specifically chosen distant opponents, or someone else sharing the same device. If anyone checks it out and likes it, let me know, and I'll send an invite for a game.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

When I was a kid I used to go watch the old German guys hold their little bonspiels on a river by my house. Now they have a really nice 4 sheet indoor facility. The computer one sounds fun, if you ever get a chance to try it in person I highly recommend it.

I'm a mediocre curler, but I still know how to bonspiel!
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

I don't remember where I first saw thise article but it had to have been right around the time it came out. May well be the very best piece of literary journalism on the subject of curling you will ever read.

Lobo, I've heard curling described as "chess on ice." As someone who knows a thing about chess (and I'm assuming has an at least academic understanding of ice), do you agree with that characterization?

Well, no. But there is an awful lot more to it than meets the eye.

Oh crap. I came across something sort of like that for the first time just yesterday ...

Obviously whatever the killer’s motive, leaving a Wara Ningyo at the scene was part of his rules. He would hardly kill a fifth victim when the number of dolls had reached zero.

"There is a thirty percent chance the killer won’t think things through that far, but that’s extremely doubtful. After all, he did wipe the light bulb sockets...”

“So there will only be four victims total. The next one is the list.”

“No. The third was the last,” L said firmly. Despite being a synthetic voice.

“There will not be another. Not with me involved.”

Confidence? Or hubris? Neither one was something Misora had laid claim to for a while now. The last few weeks in particular. What had confidence been like?

What had pride been like?

Misora no longer knew.

“But I need your assistance, Naomi Misora. I expect great things from your investigations.”

“Do you?”

“Yes. Please keep your heart frozen while you work. In my experience, what a case like this needs most is a mind that will not be moved by anything. Behave as if you are playing chess on the ice.”

Does this one allow bouncing stones off the sides (as some curling apps apparently do) or is it fairly true to the rules of the game?

I've only seen it happen once (it's easy to avoid), but if you go too far to the side, your rock drops out of play.
