Been playing "The Last Rock," a pretty cool iPad curling app. It has various practice challenges, an option to play against the computer on easy or hard mode, and a head to head option against random distant opponents, specifically chosen distant opponents, or someone else sharing the same device. If anyone checks it out and likes it, let me know, and I'll send an invite for a game.

When I was a kid I used to go watch the old German guys hold their little bonspiels on a river by my house. Now they have a really nice 4 sheet indoor facility. The computer one sounds fun, if you ever get a chance to try it in person I highly recommend it.

I don't remember where I first saw thise article but it had to have been right around the time it came out. May well be the very best piece of literary journalism on the subject of curling you will ever read.

Lobo, I've heard curling described as "chess on ice." As someone who knows a thing about chess (and I'm assuming has an at least academic understanding of ice), do you agree with that characterization?

The last few weeks in particular. What had confidence been like? What had pride been like? Misora no longer knew. “But I need your assistance, Naomi Misora. I expect great things from your investigations.” “Do you?” “Yes. Please keep your heart frozen while you work. In my experience, what a case like this needs most is a mind that will not be moved by anything. Behave as if you are playing chess on the ice.”

I've only seen it happen once (it's easy to avoid), but if you go too far to the side, your rock drops out of play.
