Eventually after repeated use you will have to replace it. However if you buy the cheap ones in bulk it shouldn't cost to much and if you are getting paid it's worth the small investment. Think of it like replacing a deck of cards (probably cheaper) you open a new deck on a regular basis, especially if you have cads signed |

I also like the idea of creating the ball with a TT and red string/lace or whatever. the chop cup is a great opener, but if you can throw in a bit of visual magic to start (either flash paper or TT transformation) it makes it even better! flash paper is awesome and everyone loves it. not sure what other posters are talking about. espeically if you only use a little bit, it doesn't cost much and it's enough of a flame to still look cool. I can understand why some people might think that the fire wallet is a crutch (which I still don't really agree with)... but just making a quick flash production of a ball is great. probably makes you look like a real pro and gives people the impression that something awesome is about to happen (which it does when those loads get under there). |

I've posted this story here DOZENS of times and it's primarily the reason I don't use flash paper close up. Once I did... and all 4 at the table, 2 kids and mom and dad were visibly disturbed and shaken. The parents quickly recovered, but both kids were crying and I left immediately. Dad found me to apologize and explained they had recently been the victims of a house fire and lost everything, barely got out with their lives. They were all still a bit skittish around fire, especially so close and if it was unexpected. Many people feel this way, I'm one of them. If someone were to light a ball of fire a few inches from my face and I weren't expecting it, you'd probably get a kick in the teeth. |

I believe you'll find what you're looking for on this four volume dvd set; "Alpha's Encyclopedia of Fire Magic".

I look at what people like during my gigs and usually keep that in my sets. It seems the ball appearing in the fire is a crowd favorite. I don't see it as a crutch but I'm there to entertain the people and if they find that entertaining...I'm doing it. I just want to know if I'm doing it safetly. Absolutely. The "crutch" argument sounds like snobbery to me. |

Akin to Pepkas story, I'm actually skittish around flash paper and fire
Long time ago, in High School, and just getting into magic. A bunch of us had a party with campfire. One if the guys had bottle of flash powder that he thought would look cool if dumped on the fire. We found that flash powder, poured out of a bottle acts much like gas. The fire traveled up the stream and the bottle exploded. It was only by the grace of god that nobody was hurt, other than a slightly singed hand If it works for you great. And I'm thinking flash paper is no worse that cherries jubilee being flambeed at table side (though that's expected) Just be ready for some not so positive reactions...

Well as long as we are all recounting our horror stories. I once had a kid run screaming hysterically from an auditorium when I pulled out Rocky Raccoon. I often have kids AND parents afraid of balloons. I've even met people who were afraid of magician's. I still do Rocky, balloons and magic.

I don't think it is about horror stories as they are the exception to the rule. I remember kids deathly afraid of balloons and nobody seems to worry about that.
The idea that flash paper is unsafe seems like a strange argument though it can indeed be. I know that in the places I work, it simply would not fit. I do not work family nights or for kid nights so take that into account when I say that. The flashes would simply not work in those environments. As for the crutch idea I think it can be. Not being arrogant, but there are ways that are effective to get and keep attention that are far better than flash paper. I have no idea how you perform or how or if you engage an audience so I would never presume that because you use flash paper it is a crutch. I am only saying it can be. Plus if this is the method you choose to use, you will not be exploring other methods. Just a thought.

The following is the message I put up elsewhere on the Café, it is a coincident that I saw this topic. According to me we keep on improving & experimenting, do what you c is getting good reactions. I've done multiple coin vanish with & without the flash paper, both get great reactions. For me in a party atmosphere a bit of Flash paper spices the flavour.
Best Wishes, Raj. Previous post elsewhere on the site for your ready reference: "These days I carry "flash paper" pocket booklet that I've hand made. Ask them to write coin or cards. If they go for coins I produce four coins from the pen cap I gave them, then I collect the coins in my right hand & the paper on which they wrote coins, take a lighter & in a "flash" do a multiple coin vanish. From here I can make the coins reappear & continue with another coin routine or simply go to cards/ropes/silk/sponge etc...... Best Wishes, Raj." |
