Is anybody else fed up with this *****?
These reviewers, who "dem" these tricks in the most appalling way, they horrify me. No script, no magic. I hate it. Am I alone? |

No. I'm not interested in a script or "magic" in a demo. Just show me what the effect looks like and how it plays in its most bare bones form.

When do do put a slight spin on it, they tell us that 9 out of 10 times. I am incredibly glad that they do not "perform" the effect. There has been many times where the trailers are so edited and don't show anything that I have passed on things, only to buy them when I actually see them demoed by the WPR. They give their honest first opinions of things. If you are that annoyed, then don't watch. There are definitely other review shows and reviewers on line to get other info from on things. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CitWWOqokTA&sns=em I'm interested that some folks are happy with the way several review shows do things. It isn't just WPR. |

Thing is, are you really expecting a reviewer (not the inventor) to learn it, hone it, polish it and script it properly for each effect reviewed, and then do it every week? on top of day to day life, work and so on?

I suppose I'm saying that it is sad. Not just the fault of the reviewers, but also the sellers. Isn't it pleasing when you see a trick demonstrated in full, as a performance?

Well, I´m not sure if I will agree to 100%. Some tricks are based on a handeling or some kind of routine to be magical. A reviewer should not show the secrets, thay should show the magic effect and give an opinion about the concept. To show a magic effect I think there must be some kind of routine to build the handeling around. WPR do this I believe and I think that they are a good guidience to how to demo a trick.

I personally prefer to see as bland a demo as possible this allows me to picture how I would create a performance to do the effect justice and make it my own. If the performance is too well delivered it may be harder for me to determine how to put my stamp on it. For example seeing Bob Cassidy perform 4DT leaves me in a position where I can't see any way I could do it any different whilst still being as good. No disrespect to Craig but I am sure if I saw Craig (or another reviewer) doing 4DT after learning it half an hour ago I would be able to see ways that I could do something with the effect taking beyond the simple demo.

It wasn't that long ago when unless you travelled some distance to a magic dealer the only time you saw the effect was when you bought it. Why on earth are people complaining about online demos, you watch the effect, do your homework and if you then still think its worth the money....buy it! Some magicians may not be as skilful as the presenter, after all its there job not a hobby sometimes a move is very easy in the hands when you watch it but not quite as easy when your practicing, you pays your money and take your choice

NO!!!!! in answer to the OP.
I agree fully with what Iain said. Would you learn FULLY three effects, script them, perform them, (perhaps you'd like a real audience drafted in as well) film it, edit it, post it ...and do that every week. That's on top of running a shop, performing, and having a bit of family life. Steve |

There is a certain kind of attitude displayed in latest & greatest that I find blood boiling, and very, very sad...

I like to make up my own mind on how I will routine an effect. And that means I do not need to see a full blown performance. I find that the more times I perform the effect, I find what clicks with the spectators, and make the adjustments as required.
I guess the OP was just venting on WPR. But still a good topic for discussion. Phil |

...Am I alone? Yes. Demoing a trick and performing magic are not the same thing. I think we're ok with that. Both serve their purposes to their audiences. It's all about context. |

“I opened it 30 minutes ago and I can do it already” is a sentence, often used by Craig Petty.
I must admit that the OP is not alone and that everytime I hear such a thing, it gives me the shivers too. However, when I read the most posts above I think there is a misunderstanding and misconception about the specific words that are used and that we probably in fact all agree. I have no problems if someone gives a demo and says: “I can give you an impression of the effect and the information of what is needed to do the trick”. There is a big difference between “to do” a trick and “to explain what is needed and give a short impression of the effect” . Nobody can do a trick in 30 minutes! To do a trick as it should be, demands a presentational patter and practice to discover all the possible eventualities. Even with a self working trick! To use a sentence as mentioned above gives young (beginning) magicians the impression that you can indeed perform a trick after 30 minutes and is a very bad example for youngsters. That you have not to practice and that you can do the trick immediately after you bought it has even become a recommendation and promotion line that you read frequently in the advertisements. That makes me sad. Here is a nice one from Ed Marlo:If you can learn a trick in five minutes, it is not worth doing it. Then, everybody can do it. So it would be much more wiser if somebody said: “I can give you a short impression of the effect and inform you about the needed skills if you want to make a trick of it”. Then I would have no problem. Now I have just as the OP has. This is not “word picking”. This is important if you love the art of magic. The real magic lies in your personality, creative talent and much much practicing. You cannot “buy” that and you can certainly not perform it after 30 minutes. You only buy “the props”. The work then only begins. So in my opinion, the sentence “I opened it 30 minutes ago and I can do it already” is indeed a very stupid sentence from a very immature someone. |

Y'all do know that the "I only opened it 30mins ago and I can do it already" is a joke...right?
They don't really watch the DVD and then perform the trick to camera after half an hour...you get that right? |
