I see that Johnson is offering a set of blemished cups for $129. Picture implies that the blemishes are on the inside.
http://www.johnsonmagicproducts.com/shop......ad7e28c1 Would seem to be a good deal. People's thoughts? |

I'd make sure that it's only a defect on the inside of the cup. I'd want to talk to someone before placing the order since you can't return the cups. They should have given a better description of the defect.

The price is fine, but I guess it depends on what you want them for. If they are for more formal shows, they may not display nicely when tipped so the insides show...may look dirty, stained, and uncared for. But for street cups or practice cups, they could be great.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

I rolled the dice and ordered a set of these cups. Since I'm really a hobbyist at this point, looks don't mean as much to me, and this seemed like a rare opportunity to step up to cups with professional size and weight. They should be here in a couple of days. I'll post pictures in case anyone else is hovering over a decision about this.

OK, the cups arrived yesterday and here are the photos. First, I had some email exchange with the company and asked if it was possible to get a set of the "least imperfect" cups. I believe that someone did a bit of selecting for me, because I'm very happy with what I received.
INSIDE: I see no blemishes at all inside of one of the cups. This cup has a half dozen very small blemishes (>1/4") plus a faint shadowy discoloration on one side. http://s984.photobucket.com/user/bethepl......jpg.html http://s984.photobucket.com/user/bethepl......jpg.html The last cup has 3 marks at the bottom that appear to have been made by a jig during shaping or polishing. http://s984.photobucket.com/user/bethepl......jpg.html OUTSIDE: I was told that the cups could also be scratched on the outside. Honestly, I had to take them out into bright sun and put on my glasses to find the scratches. Here's a picture of the worst one. You can see how close I had to get for the photo. http://s984.photobucket.com/user/bethepl......jpg.html Evaluation: I think I got a great deal. They're beautiful at any normal distance. I've always wanted high quality brass cups, and I don't feel I've had to compromise at all to get these beauties at a great price. |

What size final load to these take?

My calipers indicate that 2-1/2" should be the limit. That's a lacrosse ball. A really bald tennis ball just squeaks in, but a fuzzy one gets stuck.

You can find smaller "tennis balls" in the pet-toy section of retail department stores. These are a tad smaller than regulation tennis balls.
You'll also see several other novelty items that will work in your other magic presentations. Have fun! Julie |

Funny you mention the Pet-toy section, Julie. My final loads (with the exception of one juggling ball) are cat toys, three small balls that have the appearance of small tennis balls.

Just want to add that I bought a set of the damaged cups and balls from Johnson.I called and spoke with Kathy and she explained the damage.I then decided that I would use those for practice and and ordered a new set from Madhatter Magic. They charged me a total of 291.95 including shipping as opposed to the 363.64 it would cost to order them from Johnson(with shipping). A savings of 71.45.

Just a followup.I worked on my imperfect cups with a can of Brasso and some elbow grease and the imperfect cups look as good as the other cups I bought. All of the blemishes are gone and the discoloration and scratches are gone too. I think I probably put one hour into each cup(3 hours total)

There are two types of cups, cups that you will scratch and cups you have already scratched; unless you will only display them in a glass case and never handle them, as a working pro, you will sometime in the future scratch them, this way if you buy the scratched cups, you won’t feel so bad when you add a scratch.
You can buy two sets of scratched cups for less than a first quality set |

Not necessarily. In the past, when lacrosse balls were manufactured with a great deal of care, they were fairly consistenb at just under 2.5" in diameter. However, the NOCSAE standard for the size of lacrosse balls as of 2014 states only that the circumference of the ball shall be between 7.75" and 8". These would be 2.47 inches and 2.54 inches in diameter, respectively. That extra .04" can be critical to a cups and balls worker.
In the interest of saving cups and balls workers a lot of time,I purchased nearly a gross of lacrosse balls and found that approximately 25% of them were too large for a Paul Fox cup (from Danny Dew or RnT II). The same was true of JP cups. No individual manufacturer of lacrosse balls was 100% consistent in their sizing. You MUST fit your loads to your cups. The cups are more consistent than the lacrosse balls. Re: Tennis balls -- I found some tennis balls at CVS pharmacy that came in dozen lots. They were made in China and were just a smidge smaller than regulation tennidos balls. You can probably find them at "dollar stores." Quote: On Feb 8, 2014, BeThePlunk wrote:

Man, wish I could afford these. I've been looking for some good brass cups for my routine, but alas, they're all way out of my budget at this time

On Apr 30, 2014, Bill Palmer wrote: Boy, I can vouch for this. Last night, I took my new set of Paul Fox cups (RnT2) up to a big sporting goods chain store (Sports Authority) to test-fit lacrosse balls before purchasing them. They had a big basket full of what must have been 20 or 30 lacrosse balls. I went through every one of them, trying each individually to see how well they'd fit my cups, looking for the best fit. I walked out empty-handed. They varied quite a bit in size, but even the smallest were still too big. They wouldn't fit deeply enough into the cups for the cups to sit mouth-down upon a flat surface without some degree of wobble (caused by the ball slightly protruding beyond the mouth of the cup). With some of them, I could firmly push the ball deep enough into the cup to avoid noticeable wobble, but this resulted in a ball so tightly jammed into the cup it wouldn't come out unless you pried it out with your fingers (making them unsuitable as good final loads). They say Paul Fox cups will take a lacrosse ball, but mine wouldn't take any I tried out there in that store last night.

IMHO Personally, I think a large load, like a lacrosse ball, (unless you are using a pouch) is to big to handle deceptively.
