Hey spooky friends. As folks in the Dopps forum know, I often use Gyre as an indicator that there are spirits among us. I'm a big fan of it.
I had the thought to change things up and start my performance with it.

I'd like to introduce and pass it around the circle for each guest to spin. Each time a successful spin happens they blow out a candle until the effect is clearly present. Tension is built by the room slowly darkening as each guest takes a turn.

Some questions I'm pondering:

1. should each guest spin clockwise AND counter clockwise before passing it to the next? Or should they spin once, pass the gyre and alternate? I think just once. Typically this would result in 6 spins or so before the effect settles in.
That's 6 candles out.

2. Do you think it's ok to watch the effect slowly start to work? (normally I "remove" the gimmick as I pass to to a spec.. and the sudden effect is startling. I'm considering not doing that.. just let it happen naturally and keep it going until it clearly won't spin counter clockwise? Maybe the tension keeps building? This way I am also completely hands off.

3. I'd like to have each guest say a short simple mantra before they spin. Something akin to "I invite the peaceful dead. This is my choice. Commune and move among us."
The goal of the mantra would be to draw the specs deeper into the theatre and make them active participants in opening this portal between the living and dead. "This is my choice" is a little goofy but I'd like them to feel a bit of responsibility for whatever may or may not occur.

4. I'm debating not offering up an explanation for what GYRE is.. simply saying that it's used as an indicator of a spiritual presence. Have it be less of a magical utility item and a bit more ordinary..And no explanation for why it suddenly won't spin clockwise.. just let people enjoy the effect. - Less is more? -

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm not happy with my mantra. Maybe you scholars have a better turn of phrase?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts. At the very least, maybe this post helps to freshen up your own use of GYRE. It's been out for awhile.. I don't see a lot of posts.. but it is a wonderful effect.

Hi horus1
I just want to comment on 4.
My "problem" is almost never to explain what Gyre is, but rather how and where I came into its posession.
Other than you I perform only for kids and mostly for kids who know me. Just having things like Gyre, made out of bronze
is for them interesting. So I offer a story how I got this artefact but not really what it does.

I very much like what you are doing with Gyre. My advice would be to try it as you suggest, allowing it slowly to begin demonstrating resistance, and gauge the audience reaction from that. It certainly 'could' suggest a growing presence in the room, and I think it probably will. There is always a (slight) danger of it appearing to 'wear out', but because the gimmick actually disappears along the way I suspect you will achieve the result you desire.

Some other ideas:
a) Rather than alternating the direction, why not have them all spin it the 'wrong' way each time? Call it something like the 'spirit pass'. Soon it will refuse and only spin the 'right' way, and you could suggest that that indicates the presence of the spirit. A secret 'reload' on the Gyre (owners know what I mean) during the Dopps presentation (when Gyre is no longer 'on stage') would guarantee that it would spin freely both ways when, at the end, the spirit presence leaves.

b) The candle idea is superb but rather difficult to calculate. In some situations 6 candles will be too few, in others too many, and only occasionally just right (forgive the Goldilocks nature of the description). Instead, why not a central 'spirit candle' and several (three? four? five?) 'satellite' candles nearer the specs. That way, you could blow out the satellites as you describe and then blow out all, including the 'spirit candle' when the Gyre indicates that it is time. If, however, all of the satellite candles are extinguished before the Gyre indicates anything, those satellite candles could be relit, one for each spin, and extinguished until the presence makes itself felt--at which point you also blow out that central 'spirit candle'. You'll want to stop it appearing too much like a Menorah or Kwanza celebration, of course, but that should be a simple matter of placement.

Good thoughts. Thank you for sharing them. Well done, you.

I know this is getting to the party rather late, but I am extremely excited that it's back and stock and available. Smile also, I appreciate getting the manual before the props arrive. What a nice touch.
