When you folks get your Gyre's and have played around with them for a bit, PM me and I will describe a way to make the Gyre spin without even spinning it. All you have to do is touch it in a certain way, and it should start spinning clockwise even though you did not exert any sort of rotational spin to the object when you touched it. I didn't see this suggested when I did a fast read through the performance manual.
This was taught to me about 35 years ago using a prior incarnation of this unusual object. I suspect it should work with the Professor's object too. This little bit of information may or may not be usable to you, depending on what kind of routine you finally work up. But use it or not, it's another fun physical property of the Gyre. |

Who got their Gyre today. First impressions? Reviews? How are you explaining this purchase to your significant other

Mine was posted on Monday according to the USPS tracking number Vic sent. Estimated delivery date was today. However, it appears to have disappeared into some USPS quagmire. Perhaps the energy of Gyre was too much for the post office to handle...
I'm hoping it will reappear on the USPS radar before too long... |

Me, too Dave....perhaps a weather delay due to usps and the East coast challenges, getting out to my "Valley of the Sun" where the Gyre will undoubtedly be thawed by time of arrival (tracking said eta yesterday) in Phoenix.

Same with mine!! That is SO wierd. Supposed to be here today, but tracking says it is still stuck in a NC black hole... Those little gyres are more powerful than I expected..!
Anyway, glad I'm not alone! Seth |

They could be stuck because of the weather, but lately USPS tracking has been goofy. I sent a package to New York that showed it was in San Francisco "out for delivery" and got delivered correctly in New York the next day!
USPS tracking has been goofy this year. I'm sure you guys will get his packages shortly. |

Weather, economy...who knows...but USPS tracking has been a joke...or the tracking may be good, but the delivery is a joke. I've had packages go back and forth to and from the same city two or three times before they were delivered to my town...hundreds of miles away. And I'm usually a USPS supporter. But lately, WTF?

Well, mine actually arrived today! Got a text from my wife that she had to sign for a package, which was a bummer... I had some splainin' to do. But after that awkward bit, I had some time alone to open and examine the piece. I have to say, it performs exactly as advertised. Even the bit in order to keep it spinning normally in both directions. After some brief experimentation, I've determined that a wooden coffee table surface gives me the best reaction as far as the sudden counter spin, but even a glass or marble surface works wonderfully.
Aside from shape, the piece itself does not look like the photo at the Gemini site -- it is much rougher all around, almost like a rough stone rather than metal. The only smooth part is a small piece in the center of the rounded side, and even that is rather patchy. I was fully prepared for this because of Prof BC's description of it, and I'm sure each one is unique due to the handmade process. Though I was at first taken aback at how different it looked, I have to say this definitely gives the appearance of something very ancient, like an old Roman coin uncovered in an archeological dig. All parts that touch the table surface to spin are smooth, and it works exactly as the good professor says. No one will mistake this for a children's toy. The box it is in is beautiful, and with its inner cushion it fits it perfectly and is an excellent vessel for the artifact. As I've said previously, the performance manual is absolutely stellar and is full of amazing storytelling and inventive routines. My mind was spinning with ideas that I thought were unique to me -- but alas, another read through proved that the professor had beaten me to the punch each time. At any rate, I am extremely happy with this purchase. This is yet another winner for Prof BC! And, I am very glad to join the Gemini family for the first time as well (Alchemist's Bane was also included -- yay!!) Seth |

Mine arrived today in NYC despite the snow storm.
It is a beautiful prop. A solid piece that feels very good to hold and spin. The box and wrap add to the mystery and are very well created. It holds a reality as an artifact with a past...nothing toy about it. I adore it. The spinning both ways works nicely although it is a feature I doubt I will require. This past summer I travelled to my ancestral home, a remote island, to visit the third largest whirlpool in the world. I had some strange scary experiences as one will...drove my car into the ditch, witches, the huge incongruous panther like creature, and scariest of all...the giant deer gods. The whirlpool Corryvreckan almost killed George Orwell, it can be heard churning from many miles away and I strongly suspect it was a seasonal site of ritual human sacrifice to a watery Hag Goddess. The maelstrom spins counter clockwise and never the other way. I was actively looking for just the right spinning prop…and here it is. Gyre might seriously join the haunted key as a classic. |

Eddie, I love that connection! I myself have been musing about the rhythms of Gaia, the fact that the slipstream has moved, but as we know - as above, so below - the ley lines are shifting, portents are gathering, beneath the earth's crust, giants are awakening and elder gods stirring...

Mine arrived today and it is wondrous strange. I'm enamored with it.
Once I get enough notches on the barrel, I'll post some musings in The Crypt that might be of interest. Are you diggin' the GYRE? Oh, and "Belief"... extraordinary. E.R. Perkins

I'm honestly surprised that there hasn't been more discussion about Gyre on this forum or The Crypt. I imagine that early adapters have already received their items and have had a few minutes to play with it (I just got mine yesterday). I am working on a script dealing with an alchemist, the search for perpetual motion and a witches curse.
I'll post the actual script somewhere when I refine and finish it. I am currently searching for some sort of portable surface to use with the Gyre so you can make sure you are performing on a surface that is optimal for the Gyre. I thought that a porcelain or ceramic tea cup saucer would work, as I have a 1970's version of this item made out of lead, and that moves really good on those surfaces. But I noticed that the Gyre, probably because it's made out of brass, and maybe because it heavier (due to it's size) then my lead one (which is only 2 inches long, and a softer metal), the Gyre seems to "grip" the porcelain saucer and actually doesn't even spin counter clockwise much without stopping. It actually spins much better on my wood desktop. But I think it's important to have some sort of small portable surface which you can work on so you are ready for any situation. I am also going to look for some small, soft leather like pouch that you can slip this into (something that looks aged) so you can just drop it into your pocket when you are just going out and want to have it with you along with your other pocket mentalism and bizarre pocket props. The box is wonderful but I think it would be nice to be able to carry with you for impromptu occasions. Anyway I love the prop and I'm looking forward to experimenting with it "for when the creative juices flow." (that reminds me, I wrote a short story for a scifi mag back in the 70's entitled "For Whence the Creative Fleeces Joe." It's sort of a morality story about what happens when you use your creativeness for ill gotten gains... careful what you wish for). |
