Good evening,

I'm new to the neighborhood, but no stranger to the shadows. By way of introduction -- a suspect plate of odd-shaped cookies from next door -- I thought I might post the link to something I came across recently. A search of the café doesn't show it anywhere else. Forgive me, however, if you've seen this before.

The Library of Congress has posted spectacular, hi-rez scans of Papa Poe's work from 1884, illustrated by Gustav Doré. These are some of the most truly haunted illustrations I've ever seen. Click thru them all. You will not be disappointed. When you land on one that you like, make sure you click the "Higher Quality Images" link for ridiculous resolutions.

Welcome to this dark corner of the Café, where spiders roam and hungry spirits groan.

Thanks for sharing. May you enjoy many nights of weak and weary pondering in the dreary mid-nights ahead. EVERMORE...

This is great! Thanks for sharing.

I recently bought this version from Amazon:

I was very disappointed. The images were low resolution and washed out. The images in this Library of Congress version are much clearer!

Thanks, gents. My pleasure.

My First Poe (a new product for Fisher-Price?) had the Harry Clarke illustrations. I think they might still be my favorite because of that, also they have such a weird, visceral gut punch to them -- again, maybe because I first saw them as a kid -- but these illustrations by Doré practically define "haunted".

I love me some Library of Congress scans. Crisp leafs right off the tree.

See you 'round the headstones.
