Now some things are being said that make some good sense. You should use what fits you best.
This is why I make a walnut shell that has no ridge for the ones that would prefer to do things the same way they have always done it and are more comfortable with the same type shell.

But even these shells I make are different in some ways. I don't add any visual gimmick alterations to the shell. Like the Chanin dip or the notch at the back of shell.
The shells that Jack Chanin sold did not have these alterations. Yes the back stem notch is a natural notch from being attach to the stem.
But most the time it is much larger and still does not change the fact that it is a visual hole for the pea to escape from the shell and the man-made shells were not picked off a tree.

I know a person that just bought a collection of Jack Chanin's prototype shells and the actual shells he performed with and received a letter of authenticity on Jack Chanin’s letter head. These came from the person that bought Jack Chanin's shop.

From what was told to me; the person that sold the collection was also a friend of Jack, said that Jack made a shell for a friend that had a hard time in stealing the ball.
Jack designed a shell with a dip to make it easier for him to steal the ball. The balls back then were not like the peas we have today.

Actually the shells Jack performed with were similar to the bottom ridge shells in many ways without the ridge.

The shells Jack sold came with a square piece of cork and had instructions on how to carve the ball out to use with the shells. The collection also came with these instructions.

The cork ball would stay in the shell when moved in all directions without sound.
The mechanics of getting the ball out must had been similar to what is being used with the BRS.

This is one area that I am old school when it comes to adding visual gimmick alterations to the shells.
But if someone wants them they can add them.

The reason I make so many different type shells to choose from is because everyone can have a different need for their use. The shell game to me can be presented any way you choose for entertainment. There are no set rules.

I know there are many magicians that that perform for many different type crowds.
Some have made jokes about using the Comical Monkey shells, but to me this is looking at them with tunnel vision. The shell game has never been used for entertaining kids because it is known to be a gambling con game. This does not have to be the case, if the shells are designed to be a fun game. Kids love a game of challenge. The parents will even see this as a fun game, as the kids win in the end. Proof of this is how much kids like to play video games.
This is because video games are a game of challenge.

Many of the other shells are based around theme that function the same.
I try to bring in shells that are not just centered to one crowd.

I have been doing the shell game now for about 15 years. Before me, people have been doing this game for hundreds of years. I am glad to see people still have innovated ideas, and these ideas attract so much attention still to this day. God bless to all!
