I had the pleasure of attending an Aldo Colombini back in the late 1980's [or early 1990's]. A fine performer, and a personable and very likeable person.
Praying for a miracle.

"Am I a weirdo,
an outcast
and all alone,
I wonder?"

About 10 years ago as I look out from the penthouse, onto the dazzling nightline of Vancouver's City lights.

I wonder.

As I make small talk trying to fit in, I ask,

"Do people really understand this odd sense of humor that I have?"

Most of the times the answer is no.

I should let you know that I am at a Magic Convention hosted in Vancouver with some of, arguably, the best Magical entertainers in the world.

The lectures have concluded and it is late in the evening, everyone was partying in the Penthouse suite having a great time.

I set out in an attempt to make these magical titans laugh ,
some did and some did not,
mostly not.

I wonder.

As I invariably dove into a comedic tangent to which there is no escape as I usually do,

I land on the topic of circumcision, yes it was very late:)

Now I was quietly talking to one fellow magician in the corner outside on the roof away from the 40 or 50 people mingling away.

I decide in my liquid courage state to go up to a man, whom I looked up to very much, literally and figuratively , whom I've never met.

He was a large Italian man with a heavy accent.

I ask,
" So, we were taking a poll ,we you circumcised?"

As I felt the words coming from my mouth, fear set in,

Uh oh , I've just acting like a weirdo again , possibly insulting someone I look up to, I meant it in jest but nonetheless it was blunt and out of context to say the least .

I wonder.

He was Not happy that I asked him this and demanded in his thick Italian accent the meaning behind it,

I told him that I was just trying to be funny and told him the ( so I thought) humorous story leading up to the question and why I had asked,

He then shouted in a large booming voice " Everyone may I have your attention!"

Oh s%#,
I thought

and I'll never forget what he said next,
" You canna not believe what he said to me,it as wrong,he wanna to ask if I as circumcised?"

I was horrified to say least, what could he possibly say next after asking such an inappropriate question?

He said ,

" Would all of you ,who have been circumcised go to the left side of the room and those of you who have not been circumcised go to the right side of the room!!"

and they ALL did it!

"Now what?" he said......
I started laughing hysterically!

I had never felt so accepted in my life,

to a man a hardly knew, whom I only talked to for literally 2 minutes ,affected my deeply.

I AM a weirdo,
I AM an outcast,

and I am NOT alone.

That man was Aldo Colombini.

It's not the magic but the man,
and you Mr Colombini, were the magic.

My deepest condolences to Mr Colombini's family.

Aldo Colombini was the first "name" in the magic community to take an interest in me and recognize my potential. In the mid 90s when he was living in the LA area, I went down for a couple of weeks to take lessons from him. Not only would he not accept my money, but he gave me one of each of every book, trick, and video he had produced--and Aldo was a VERY prolific creator, so I had quite a collection. He wrote the forward to my "Great Scott! It's Magic!" book trilogy, and he came to visit and lecture in my home multiple times. He introduced me to many other "names" in magic and helped me get my foot in the door lecturing at magic clubs and conventions.

Aldo is not perfect by any means (which of us is?) but he was gregarious and friendly, and not just to the famous. Every time I visited the Magic Castle in Hollywood with him, Aldo would greet every hostess, bartender, and waiter by name with the same enthusiasm as he did the big-name magicians. The staff at the Castle lit up when they saw him coming. He was a friend, teacher, and mentor to me, a guy from Idaho who was a total unknown in the magic community. I love him, and I will miss him terribly.

I would GREATLY appreciate your prayers for Aldo and Rachel.

I love watching Aldo perform, and have purchased many of his DVD's - not just to learn the tricks, but mostly to watch him work. Over email he has been as kind and friendly as he appears "on screen".

Praying for Aldo and Rachel at a very difficult time.

Truly heart breaking news and my heart goes out to Rachel and Aldo's family and friends. Without doubt, any time I was asked whom my favorite performer was, the answer was always the same - Aldo Columbini. His love of life, comedy and above all his genuine concern and kindness to everyone he met.I consider myself lucky to have met this beautiful soul and his lovely wife.
Magic 1178 in a twist of irony I was at the Penthouse you mentioned and am not surprised by his reaction. He love of life was supreme and all those around him benefited and left with a smile as a result. My thoughts are with him and Rachel.

I had the chance to meet Rachael and her wonderful husband at MagicFest a few years ago. Rachael was recovering from a hard medical time herself and I could see the pure love in Aldo's eyes as it poured out whenever he looked at Rachael. I instantly loved both of them then and I'm praying for them now. Warmest regards. Alan

Aldo has passed away? It is truly terrible news.

So sad; Aldo was one of the most "alive" performer, comic and genuine nice guys in the business.
He will be missed by many.
Prayers for peace and comfort for Rachel.

Words fail me, so, I can only pray what we Eastern Orthodox pray when someone has fallen asleep in the Lord: +May his memory be eternal+

Rachel, may Almighty God comfort you in this difficult time. Though you are sad, you have said that Aldo would not have wished to live in a way that would have artificially sustained him. He is free now yet know that his love and devotion for you is eternal.
