I find myself somewhat bemused by many threads about how magic is boring or "I need something new" or "it really fooled them", etc.
Just the effect of 6" of snow, I guess -- too much think and not enough "do" So, I thought to share a story about what performance magic means ... Threefold Magic The old man spoke softly but not from frailty of years. Those around the fire with rapt attention gathered in every word, while those distracted heard only crackling flames. In truth, those not interested in magic would forget he was ever there, and students such as I reported home nestled in bed. “Many are called but few choose,” was a phrase I learned that day. “All magic is bound in threes,” enticed the whisper. My undisciplined thoughts flirted with the image of a tree. The roots, truck and branches were all laughing at me. “There are those impossible things you agree to see, those you would deny and those you would pretend at to empower your ability to choose between.” Leaves and flowers surrounded the branches while the network of roots vanished beneath soil and stone. I became a furry small hugging the bark in safety only to leap out – transform into a bird and spiraling towards the clouds. “As most magic is of the Earth all stories of value must appraise the impact on Mind and Spirit and Flesh.” An object fell from the boughs above to be appraised in imagination’s eyes. An arrow-like branch plunging toward my heart? Run, hide! A lush fruit? Catch and savor! A shower of snow? Arms over head in laughter! A threat, gift or illusion. I must choose. “Your mastery of the magic arts will come from the joyful solitude of creation, the courage of the sharing and the nurturing of spirit in the stories told after.” I was astonished to be in a grove of trees, each unique but together a hint of forest. One shrank to be a tiny nut upon the moss. Another cast its shade about me for protection from the sun. A towering fir splintered to a pile of logs next to the fire warming my feet. Perhaps I dozed off a bit in the snuggled comfort of the dreams and missed out on some secrets I might share today. The wise one was chuckling, though, and had set out some small baskets and colored stones atop a blanket. He demonstrated wondrous actions claimed impossible by older folks and I learned of mental boxes named transformation, vanish, shape-shifting, transportation, penetration and more. I knew he accomplished these illusions through diversion and guile, but also from my expectations and desires and trust. “By ordering these stones in certain ways I can do mathematical calculations once thought to be magic and a source of power.” “If these two stones are blended in a fearsome fire I can forge a blade stronger that iron found in nature. This also was once a closely held secret of magic purport.” “This basket of woven grass can hold water. A simple task long ago, but now considered magic as no one can do this craft today,” and I came to understand that there is but a thin veil between what can be conceived of and agreed as science. That what is considered impossible by others is often an illusion. That the only real fear is that of “being found out” – caught in the pretend life we lead. That you may never believe a word I say, but will tell of the green stone in my hand that turned to red, became two and then vanished beneath the shadowed moon. You will embrace magic because you must. My simple tricks with rings and scarves can inspire you to challenge adversity. You and I, my friend, can energize something more than we can conquer alone. One and one make three. Is that not magic enough? The pendulum swings to enscribe Arrows and Eyes in the air. Mystery or truth can be revealed by this science and the magic we allow. I open my hand to reveal a stone where none existed before. Then you go back to your store and tell of a new product idea. I pretend to read your mind to the amusement of all around. A chance heard whistled tune reminds you of a childhood friend but a phone call away – and she says that she has been thinking of you. I do not do magic, but it happens all around me and sometimes I get blamed. I have an expectation of magic and it is there. I have an appreciation of magic and it finds me. I tell stories of awe and wonder and, above all, I get things done! I am the seed and the shade and the quiet embers. Gather close and tell me a story of awe and wonder that I might know of your magic too. Today I will create a new magic effect and gift it away. Today I will find courage to provide an answer another does not wish to hear. This evening I will reflect on what I have learned from these experiences. All three are necessary that I am prepared for tomorrow’s magic! “Why can a child find magic in simple things and create mirth with antics and search? Careful my friend, that may be an answer rather than a question. For now we can pretend.” on the count of three you will awake …

Becuase the child does not know the method obviously. The child is not one who knows.
Read my book.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

It matters not, it seems to me, if what they know be right or wrong what matters is the know of it, which is to say, the know of it must be a mystery to be magic. One can be one who knows but act childish and call the snow and all magic if one so chooses. But if one did so then one would run the risk of being called by my grandson, silly or senile.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
