I've been hearing about this one for a while, and I'm glad to see John and Vanishing Inc finally have it on the market!
Price: $80.00 for Boston or London Map ($120 for both) Trailer: The Streets by John Archer and Vanishing Inc. From the man who fooled Penn & Teller in their hit show, we bring you "The Streets." The plot is simple: someone picks a city street map and thinks of ANY street they see on the page. You read his mind and tell him many details about the page he is looking at and even EXACTLY what street he is thinking of. The quantum leap forward with "The Streets" is that, finally, John Archer has solved the biggest issue with any book test: why use a book? People don't need books to think of words, so why use them at all? But here you change the game: you ask someone to think of a STREET, and provide a book of maps to help. Now, there's a very logical REASON to carry a book of maps. "The Streets" comes with two custom-printed map books (London and Boston) that do all the work for you. These books are subtle works of art. They look JUST like the real thing, but these maps have all sorts of built-in features that force various streets and features. The package also includes a beautiful storage box for both books, two indexes, a 50-page booklet (including two full routines by Luke Jermay) and access to a 30-minute video download of John Archer performing and explaining the routine. This is a full routine that can be performed anywhere in the world. The presentation is perfectly justified even if you don't live in London or Boston. "The Streets is more than a single trick; it's a practical tool for the working mentalist-which means if you use it wisely, it might actually keep you off the streets!" - Max Maven "This is a professionally designed piece of equipment which looks good, works well and offers time-tested methods built-into a deceptively convincing and modern package. The Streets can turn any performer into a human GPS." - Michael Weber "A utility tool that will allow even those left cold by traditional book tests to craft exciting demonstrations of super memory, telepathy or body language reading." - Luke Jermay Link: The Streets Combo and London Map

Looks great - just watched the video and got the email.
I am curious (as with any test) in terms of the how much sea-fooding is needed to make a catch? To me that is key. I really liked the method used in Glance a great deal - and Archer is a genius with a lot of his stuff.

I just ordered the Boston version at MJM - Vanishing for some reason only seems to show the two book package for $120 ?
I love these kinds of tests - I will review when I get it.

OK - with Vanishing when you actually click the "order" button you then get options for ordering both books - or the books separately for $80 each.
I had no use for the London version. I'm going to take a guess now that the two cities chosen were picked for a reason - perhaps the fact that they have extensive subway systems. That may have something to do with the method of deep sea ****ing to get what is needed by the performer. Just a wild guess.

I was at the recording of the performance (it was shot at this years Session Convention). It did not feature anything about the subway, the participants were looking at the actual street map pages.
Being from Holland, I was doubtful of any potential this had for me. Thinking about it, though: London is a popular city to visit as a tourist, chances of people knowing it - too - well are extremely low. On the other hand, the presentational angle John used was knowing London and its streets. A premise I could never pull off. |

As a Londoner I'm not sure I would have any use for this. No fishing here, but I'm working on the assumption that these are not representative of what one might find in a regular A-Z.

I use this in and around London with no problems at all. Great thing is that London is a very big place. You instruct the participants to avoid the major landmarks like the west end (which they shouldn't have any trouble with). Never had a problem with this at all.
Just for your peace of mind Tomsk192 would you be able to name every road in Barnet, or Harrow or even the general layout of Streatham or South Norwood? What about Woolwich or Bermondsey, Stockwell or Balham? See what I mean? London is a very big place and once you get outside of the west end/city one page of the A-Z looks pretty much like another. Brett, no more sea food in this than any other book test, and in the two person effect no real sea food. Mark |

Hey Tom I used to live in Hackney just off Mare Street by London Fields, even Hackney is a big place, if you showed me a Hackney page of the A-Z beyond Mare St, Well St, Viccy Park I'd have no idea if it was real or fake, same for Balham, Stockwell and Brixton, all places that I have lived and worked over the years. If I weren't off to Mexico in a few days I could hook up with you in London and bring my copy with me.
In the short term though just go in Smiths, grab an A-Z and open it on any page that's not part of the opening credits of East Enders and see how recognisable it is. Even the streets you walk on a daily basis are rarely seen from that angle which is why they have an index so you can locate the very street you are standing in. There are well over 10,000 streets in London, I doubt even Harry Lorrayne could memorise them all. Mark |

It is not new indeed, I got it some years ago. It is a solid book test with several methods cleverly incorporated. I performed it occasionally for international audiences. By adding several other city maps it plays well, makes sense and offers a nice theme. I can recommend it really. Jan

I suppose my worry is that I've done sooooo much driving around London that I'd be looking for the main arteries, so to speak, which I can follow from page to page. Of course, I wouldn't know the back streets on most pages at all, but that's why I'd like to have a look at it, to see if it mostly resembles London to an informed eye. Does that make any sense? Best, Tom |

Haha but for the fact I moved away 20 years ago we would practically be neighbours (I did not want to bring kids up in Hackney while it was still working its way up to a slum lol) Hackney, the only place I know where the dustman delivers. A petrol bomb got thrown through the window of my local .... Somebody drank it! Thank you, I'm here all week lol.
Remember in a book test it only needs to pass casual inspection rather than a full examination. This looks like an A-Z the spectator opens it to one of the 99 maps, looks at the top of the page and notes the general area then puts their finger down anywhere on the page and remembers to road closest to their finger, or picks a road in that general area and then closes the book. Alternately (or in addition) you riffle through the index of around 10000 street names in the back of the book and the spectator calls stop and takes a note of the first road on the page. It's a very good prop and has some very nice routines. I am assuming that the London Map hasn't been updated as I haven't seen the vanishing inc version. I have the original. Mark |

It is the same, just a different title for the prop release. Initially it was called also "Streetwise". Jan

I live in London, and due to my job have been to most areas a lot. I'd use the New York version in London.

Good luck with this release guys, sounds nice. While this is nice, I'd rather see a new DVD set from John myself.

On , Kaarlo von Freymann wrote: I like what I see so far but something was missing from my package - MJM is sending me the missing item and I look forward to testing it soon. It is a clever book and the quality of the book appears to be excellent. I am very familiar with Boston as I used to live there - the Streets used all seem to be purposely obscure names that even if you were a resident you might not know (except for Beacon Street). I think London is the same (I only have Boston). Archer has a nice online teaching video at Vanishing Inc's site - Boston book wasn't printed when video was made so all references are to London book. There are two f methods in the Boston book - both well known to anyone using book tests. The maps in the book appear quite normal but you would not want people spending too much time fiddling through them so as not to see something. Archer also shows how to combine these books with some reg books to make things even more fair. All in all I like it and so far would rate it 7.8 out of 10 just based on what I see and not having tried it in front of an audience. Its a quality prop.
