I've got a new video on my site and I thought I'd share it with you guys. It's the effect Osmosis and I don't hear it talked about much on here so I thought I'd bring it up. Check it out at

Nice! For anyone interested in learning the routine, it's found in Vol. 2 of the Art of Astonishment under: Osmosis by Sylvain Mirouf.
It's a difficult one to present because it's rather long. Anyone have ideas on presentations?? I have performed it a few times and have used a presentation along the lines of - "hold on, let me get this right... wait, now this is stuck in here.. ok .. no, now these are stuck too... " I'm presenting it as though I'm trying to get the pieces into a certain configuration but I'm having trouble. Of course the specs see some very strange topology along the way. Mike Mike

In my eyes, this is one of those effects so powerful that words only spoil it. It's beyond impossible, and no patter is really worth stumbling through while the very visual effect is taking place. The only point that I ever speak in the routine is at the end when I mention that unfortunately the only way to get them apart is to rip them, then I do that and continue with the restoration as an "afterthought." There are very few effects out there besides stage work that can be done completely silently and have the impact of this one, and the silence creates an obvious mood difference for the spectators. It also causes them to pay closer attention, and heightens the drama.
This is also just my opinion and maybe you'll all find me completely wrong, but do whatever works best for you. As far as length, this shouldn't be any longer than most of your other effects or routines. If you mean it's long by the fact that you think the audience will get bored while folding/tearing, then just remember the cardinal rule that if you pay attention, so will they; if you don't, they won't either. So just be very attuned to what you're doing and they'll realize it's a more serious bit of magic. -Christian

How fortuitous, here I am sitting with a few Kings and Queens I was about to prepare to continue practicing the routine. I hadn't recieved any replies over at Penguin Magic as it doesn't look like many people do this routine.
I have only just started looking at this so my comments are as someone new to the trick. My first difficulty was tearing the cards the nicely, you have 4 layers you are trying to tear on a bend, getting better but in a presentation scenario when you want to present this to someone, it is a little difficult to do nicely. You do the link transition ~1.45 very cleanly, quite nice. The final Tear is also something I really need to work on. Oh and the Donnie Darko/Mad World music was a nice choice.

Very, very nice! I'm blown away. I'd say that's worth the $45 dollars right there for AOA Vol 2. (On second thought, I don't know that I want to know how it works) Is it a knuckle buster?
P.S. Not quite on the subject, would you mind sharing the titles of the songs you used in this effect, and Unshuffling Rebecca? |

Well in Osmosis he uses Mad World (By Gary Jules), as I said, used very well in Donnie Darko, see it if you haven't.
Oh, and the other one (I just watched it) is Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve.

Christian,
Very nicely done, the whole website is great, very entertaining and love the video productions. I have screwed around with making small videos in the past and it takes a lot of talent to put together effects, music and multiple angles....WOW I really enjoyed my stop there. Congratulations from a fellow Buckeye...You do Ohio proud. Best of luck Nick Zender Akron, Ohio |
