You should look into books on theory, like Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz. You've got a ton of sleights and routines already, so theory will make those better!

I would suggest Giobbi's 5 Volume Card College books. You don't need to get all 5 at once.

I am a musician with some formal training, but I don't perform at a high level, mostly because I don't put in the study and practice time. I can look at piece of music for one of my instruments (I am a singer and classical guitarist), and quickly appreciate how I might technically execute it, etc. That doesn't mean that I will be able to do so right away. As for the artistry and musicianship beyond the technique? Whole other story. I suspect that you were trying to tell us that you are well-read in magic and understand the bulk of the technical concepts that might be unclear on first first to a neophyte, but that does not mean that you can do every trick or move you know about with prowess and artistry. And you are welcome on the suggestions. I love magic books and have been a big fan of Dover reprints in a wide variety or areas (not just magic) for years, so if an inexpensive volume looks like it might be of even passing interest to me I will pick it up. I would rather spend my money there than impulsively splurging on a single new trick at Penguin (though I have done that too). |

3 of clubs_103,
A book that I would highly recommend on theory that I think you would enjoy is "The Performance of Close-up Magic" by Eugene Burger... not as dry as some of the other great books listed. I have read that you are most interested in card magic and other close-up magic; investigate the Cups and Balls, many foundations can be learned from it that carry into other close-up categories. Though once hooked on Cups and Balls you might catch Cup Fever and become a collector... LOL. Bruce |

These three are good: International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Society of American Magicians, and the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. If you're not in the USA it will probably be harder to find one. The SAM is obviously only in the USA.

I have thought about joining the Society of Young Magicians. Would you suggest joining this or the International Brotherhood of Magicians?

This whole time I thought you were an adult lol. Nice collection of books for your age. You'll have to wait till you're 18 to join the SAM or IBM but definitely check out your local SYM assembly. It's a great place to start and meet others who share the same passion for magic.

3 of clubs_103,
Like Bulla stated "This whole time I thought you were an adult lol," my recommendation to you as a hobbyist, collector and hack (LOL), don't be in a rush to purchase new stuff that will sit on a shelf. Have fun with what you know and already have, save your money for some good stuff... then maybe you can afford to invest in a great set of Cups. When I was young, I would have wanted that advice having wasted money on stuff just because I wanted something new. Work on your skills and presentation and you will be all the better for it and so ahead of the game. Good luck, Bruce |
