If you could turn back time to the beginning of your Mentalism journey, what advice would you give yourself?
The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love & be loved in return.

To no try to do too much. I think Bob Cassidy says it best, something to the effect of the more abilities you attempt or try to claim within a performance the less impact and believability you offer. Congruency is so important.
Also that you don't need "the latest and the greatest" of every new release, and to quit searching for that "holy grail: item or effect that doesn't exist. |

I would tell myself all about the future. My past self would then have been a fantastic medium.

If I could turn back time I would have gone ahead and took more risks at creating projects. back then I probably could have made more money than I can now from mentalism in this market today. Don't hold back trust your gut instincts dare to do things differently. I would apply that to everything though not just mentalism.

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way I'd take back those words that hurt you and you'd stay I don't know why I did the things I did I don't know why I said the things I said Pride's like a knife it can cut deep inside Words are like weapons they wound sometimes. Greg

Avoid the Café
Not that I don't love this place, just that when I was getting started I spent way more time lurking here than I did practicing, studying, or performing. |

In fact I wished to have joined the Café earlier... I have been lurking around for years and not be able to ask my own questions.

A very helpful thread for those of us who are just starting out.
The sudden image of Cher on that flight-deck though, I could do without.

If I had the power to turn back time...I would go up to Cris Angel and say okay magic boy let's see you do *this* and then I would take us both back to 1925 and we would both become our own grandfathers.

Okay. Honest answer. First I wouldn't start off by reading Annemann and Corinda and consider it my introduction to mentalism. Don't get excited. I'm not dissing either one. They are classics...foundational books. Critical books. But they're not introductory books. I'd consider them critical once I had a grounding in mentalism. I'd suggest I read the the Foundations of Mentalism by Osterlind and The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy, Volume 2. I'd follow this with Mentalism, Incorporated by Chuck Hickok and Maximum Entertainment. I would advise me to study these books like I studied university texts. THEN I would have the chops to start understanding what Annemann and Corinda are teaching me.
Then I'd make a list of the areas I read about that excite my spirit. Telepathy? Clairvoyance? Readings? I'd study whatever excites me extensively (what it looks like in the 'real' world as well as how it looks when performers try to present stage versions of the same thing) and start constructing the on stage person I would be and the effects I'd be doing. I'd make a point of watching mentalists -- real mentalists -- perform. Not to copy them...but to see what mentalism looks like from different perspectives. Then I'd make a point of joining boards like this and just sit quietly and listen for a couple of weeks. Listen to what people are talking about...the kinds of things they think about. After a while, I would respectfully introduce myself and enter into discussions with the attitude that I am there to learn and share...maybe that I don't suddenly know everything. Say what you want about the Café. Many do...but the fact of the matter is thst there are some great guys still coming here...and great wisdom being shared, once you learn how to separate the crap from the gems. Then I would design my act snd get out in front of people and work it. I wouldn't care so much about getting paid as learning my craft. It's a process...an investment of time, intellect and passion. I'd tell me to work hard and take joy in the journey. That's what I would tell me. And I'd also tell me to buy lots of Google stock. David
