Man, thank you guys so much for all the positive comments! To address the above comment, it really isn't necessary to use those. I am not a performer for magicians, but lay people, and they have no idea the difference of thickness of 5 cards to 10 cards to 15 cards. Plus, as an opener, they aren't even watching super carefully anyways as they have no need to yet. You know?

Also, if the WPR boys can't play an "Observation Test" routine without becoming antagonistic (which was readily apparent in Sean's comments) there are a multitude of alternate angles for the most minor bit of effort spent on creative thinking:

1) The casinos in Las Vegas are always trying to fool players into believing things that aren't actually reality, they'd like you to believe you have a great hand, but in reality .... blah, blah, blah
2) I (the magician) have the WORST powers of observation of anybody I've ever met ... for example when I look at these cards, I see them as having red backs .... blah, blah blah
3) The United States Playing Card Company has changed the ink they use to print cards ......

The above is from 2 minutes of thinking about it, probably something the WPR boys should have done ... spent at least 5 minutes thinking about what they actually had in their hands.

Personally, I choose to conduct a friendly Observation Test without it becoming a contest, or antagonistic.

......oh, and I don't blame my personal flashing errors on "angle issues" inherent in the effect!! Smile

Hey guys- need help, RE: Poker Test 2.0. I'm trying to adapt to a particular presentation I came up with- I would like to have the cards presented blank on the front AND back, and then turn into a Royal Flush one side, all different backs(an assortment similar to Vanishing Inc.'s PRISM, or the cards that come with Bannon's Fractal tricks) on the other.

So... I would need a set of blank facers with multi-colored backs. Are these available anywhere?

I can't recall any existing tricks that use what you need but there is probably something out there so maybe someone knows of one. Some unusual decks include a blank face card but I have no idea which ones so that would probably involve asking around at the dealers. Trouble is that many likely won't know for sure but perhaps folks here can chime in.

So if you're like me and cannot make them yourself, here's what I have done multiple times in similar situations. IMO the easiest thing to do is to collect the backs you want to use, which will probably mean buying individual decks or an existing packet trick such as Spin Doctor. Personally I buy the decks to have extras but more importantly I can get the exact backs I prefer. Probably a good idea to include the blanks as well.

Then send the cards to Shawn Evans at http://www.mimesis-magic.com
He does a great job and it will only cost you a couple bucks per card.
Email him first and ask him about his availability and time frame, etc. and if he has any other advice for you.
Get at least 2 sets made while you're at it so you can have one for practice.
I have done this exact procedure several times and I've always been extremely happy with the finished product.

Maybe if you've time , collect the decks you want , then erase the ink on the face of the card , easiest will be Ace Clubs in every deck . So you've ended up with yourself a blank face card with the back design you wish to have .

This is a great freaking solution! I highly recommend this one, btw that routine sounds like it is going to be awesome.

If you choose to go that route, I recommend using 0000 steel wool instead of an eraser. Rub the wool over the ink just like you would use an eraser. Sometimes, the original finish on the card is damaged slightly--In a few lighting conditions, the erased spots stand out. To restore the finish, some magicians in the past have recommended using some slort of gloss finish to restore the shine. Others have recommended rubbing the wool not only over the pips to erase them, but over the whole card to get a consistent finish (so the light won't highlight any differences). There are a few threads on the Café that discuss the art of DIY blank face cards, too. Good luck with finding/making those cards, and once you're done, I would love to see the routine!

Thanks for all your help, guys. I found a gaff maker on Etsy who is willing to help, but I also went ahead and purchased a Rainbow deck that I will use to make backups- perhaps with the erase/steel wool method. I will check in once I get everything settled. Thanks again.

Can you link to the gaff maker? It might be a cool resource for more people to know about.

Erik- I'm talking with two gaff makers at the moment- one was suggested to me earlier by videoman (http://www.mimesis-magic.com), the other is a gent I found on Etsy. I'd rather not officially recommend anyone until I see how things work out. So far, both have been responsive, but I'm looking forward to seeing the quality of the work. Sure they will both be great, I'll report back soon.

Sorry guys (Erik I wrote you an email), it could be possible to know when Poker Test will be again available from Penguin Magic? Nobody at Penguin seems to know it and I have an important order (made on 16 of June) blocked at Penguin because of Poker Test. Three weeks ago they told me that Poker Test would be available at the end of last week ( July 8 ) but when I wrote them again (on July 8) they told me that they have no clue about when it will be again available! I'm a little worried now Smile

Thank you!

Penguin Magic and other magic dealers should be getting their shipments this week! (Today most likely).

As the Penguin email says, it goes to the top 20 then sells out every time. And every time that happens.

Wanted to give an update regarding gaffs I had made for this effect to enable the cards to be shown blank on the fronts AND backs in the beginning.

Went with two different gaff makers, one that was recommended by videoman, and one that that I found on ETSY.

SHAWN EVANS(suggested by videoman)
http://www.mimesis-magic.com/specialty__refill_cards.html

Fast service, UNBELIEVABLE quality. Had five cards made- blank fronts, backs from the 'Strangers Gallery.' Each card came in it's own plastic protective case. Precision made- you would think they came from the factory. Very happy with this purchase.

ETSY guy, not so much. Cards took a few weeks(in fairness to him, he had to order a Rainbow Deck from Amazon, so that took awhile. Then there was a family issue, which I can sympathize with). Anyway, cards finally arrived and I wasn't too pleased with the work, especially compared to Shawn's. Faces were blank, but improperly split as you could see varying degrees of gray 'bleed-through' among the cards. They look funky, and it's definitely something people would notice. Wrote him about it requesting new gaffs or refund, haven't heard back. Not sure what else to do.

GOOD NEWS:
Tried the effect a few times last night at a business function, with a modified routine and custom patter related to my business. Worked great, people loved it.

In my handling, I start with 'completely blank' cards(4 total). Also show them individually, front and back(some may say this is over proving, but I disagree. Really sells that they are blank, and perfectly sets 'em up for the finale).

I then do a slightly modified paintbrush change I learned from Mark Elsdon's B.M.T.H.O.A.P.T. effect(bring card up off the back, push forward, pull back again to reveal 'painted card') to show the first face(Jack of Clubs, in this case). Move 'paintbrush' to the bottom of stack, then fan to reveal the other Jacks, deliver the final patter line, then turn the fan around to reveal the beautifully colored Strangers backs.

A lot of fun to perform, can't wait to try it out again.

Thanks for the update! As a fan of PT, I love watching all variations and all routines using the principle. Do you think you could film a performance video for us? If not, don't worry about it!

Thanks for the feedback, Zack.

Not really big on posting videos, hope my brief description above will suffice. Be happy to share more details via PM if someone is seriously interested.

BTW: To be fair, I thought I'd mention that the ETSY guy gave me a full refund for the gaffs that I wasn't happy with. He handled the situation perfectly, in my opinion. So much so, that despite the disappointing first go-around, I would definitely give him another chance.
